That depends. Most operating systems allow you to use multiple monitors in a variety of ways by default, and software can further increase these options. Basically, most modern devices (like GPUs) can output image on more than one output (DisplayPort can even daisy chain). You can either mirror the image being produced on the main output, or you can extend your output across the monitors. For instance, with two 1920x1080 monitors you can have either 1920x1080 by mirroring, or effectively 3840x1080.
