I would say Good Guy Frank, but I know he's not a good guy so Better-than-the-last-guy Guy Frank seems more fitting.

He's a homophobic, sexist asshole. Less so than the average Pope, though.

  • Not really. He's still not very big on the homosexuals, and to my knowledge, he hasn't done anything to stop the Catholic church's cover-ups of child abuse, nor has he yet let the Africans know that condom use substantially decreases the spread of AIDS (dispute what they have been told in the past). If he has done either of those, let me know.

  • Here is what the catholic church has done for modern society + Relief from the Barbarian invasions of the early middle ages + Rescued Christian and pre-christian literature + Spread agricultural and animal husbandry knowledge + Started and protected universities + Sponsored and supported science and medicine + Created International Law theory + Developed and sponsored modern economic theory + Invented charity as we know it + Codified, expanded, and improved Western Law + Developed Western Morality + Created just war theory + Sponsored and influenced art and architecture + Developed the concept of inalienable rights These are all big things which vastly outweigh the wrongs members of the church have committed. Yes, the pope hasn't done much so far, though how this makes him evil I have yet to see Frankie explain.
+ Relief from the Barbarian invasions of the early middle ages
They did no such thing.
+ Rescued Christian and pre-christian literature
Insignificant. Such literature would have been better lost.
+ Spread agricultural and animal husbandry knowledge
Uhh, no.
+ Started and protected universities
Universities were most certainly not invented by the Catholic Church.
+ Sponsored and supported science and medicine Quite the opposite.
+ Created International Law theory
Lol.
+ Developed and sponsored modern economic theory
At this point, I'm quite convinced that you have absolutely no knowledge of history.
+ Invented charity as we know it
Patently false.
+ Codified, expanded, and improved Western Law
Completely false.
+ Developed Western Morality
False.
+ Created just war theory
False.
+ Sponsored and influenced art and architecture
Its pathetic that the claim which has the most merit has to be at the end of your even more pathetic list.
+ Developed the concept of inalienable rights
LOL

As you are a Christian, it is a law of nature that you are devoid of those cognitive faculties which would have allowed a normal human (such as atheists, agnostics, and so on) to grasp basic facts regarding history. Needless to say, I am far more intelligent than you (or most Christians for that matter) will ever be and have an infinitely superior understanding of history compared to any Christian. From this, it naturally follows that I am right and you are wrong and that you have been utterly thrashed by me in this topic. Have a nice day and continue to bask in your defeat. :D

  • It does indeed. By the way, "dumb Christians" is redundant. Careful with that next time.

3/10. If you actually did any research at all instead of desperately trying to deny the facts, you'd see that I am right. here is a starting point.

  • Those are things the Catholic Church have done for THEM not for us. It's all part of a bigger plan to gain supporters. Religion is corrupt.

Saying that all of these things are things which the Catholic Church has done for us is misleading. I'll even grant to you that all of those things were provided to us by the Catholic Church, which they weren't (Locke and Rousseau and the like could have conceived of natural rights and Western morality regardless of the existence of the church). It would be like saying that slave owners are altogether good; even though slavery is abhorrent, without the food which was created by slave labor, many people would have starved to death. This fails to take into account that slavery was simply the available means through which food happened to be produced, but it is by no means a necessary part of food production, and nobody would ever conflate slavery with food production. Likewise, there is no reason to conflate the Catholic Church with, say, starting and protecting universities or protecting ourselves from barbarians. Just as we can see that it is very easy to produce food without slave labor, we can observe today that propping up universities and protecting ourselves from foreign threats is easy, even without religious intervention. Lastly, the functions you described were all done long in the past, and they do nothing to defend the characters of John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis (which is the topic of this discussion).

  •
I stopped reading here
The Catholic Church could not ask for a better apologist. Always ready to utterly refute any argument by sticking his fingers in his ears and yelling "DUMMYHEAD!" Your list of Church Pros, even if it was entirely accurate, operates under the false assumption that the positive actions of the Church somehow intrinsically required the Church as a catalyst. Benefits can arise from bad institutions. What makes an institution bad is that it makes the road to those benefits unnecessarily convoluted, which anyone who knows anything about the Catholic Church's long history of intolerance, misinformation, corruption, murder, and war can see.

Perhaps you should have a look into the Western values which you think the Catholic church created, maybe you'll learn that if you decide what you believe within the first ten years of your life and then coast through your life so closed-mindedly, you'll rarely come to correct conclusions. Or perhaps you should tell me why the point I made is wrong instead of expecting me to take your word that it's idiotic? Clearly, if I posted it, I don't think it's idiotic. Better yet, why don't you read the entire post and then decide if it's idiotic, instead of coming to a biased conclusion before you have evidence to confirm or deny it?
