I suggest you look up Dr Bart Ehrman. The bible is definitely not what most people (especially Christians) think it it.

  • He likes to over-hype and mislead with his arguments. Here's a review by a New Testament textual critic that goes over his book Misquoting Jesus. http://benwitherington.blogspot.com.au/2006/03/misanalyzing-text-criticism-bart.html

One of the first things I ever watched to do with Bart Ehrman was a debate he had with the guy reviewing his book in that article (I'm not sure which one came first) and I thought that Bart made the better case. Also the trouble is that a lot of them are religious and will tend to be a bit bias on this subject, whereas Bart is an agnostic which I feel might give him a bit of an edge since it is more of a neutral position but I am by know means invalidating his points. It's just that the historicity of the bible isn't really common knowledge and when two people in that profession don't agree on things it really comes down to who you think is making the most sense.
