And let's say you're using a specific kind of kettle that's made of 3-inch metal. The kettle has a latch on it, that when shut, makes the kettle completely airproof, waterproof, gasproof, etc.
You open the latch until the water starts to boil and steam comes out. Then you shut the latch. What would happen?

Wait hold on, if the kettle's pressure starts increasing after the kettle is closed (i.e. if it was left open UNTIL it started boiling), wouldn't the very substance's properties change because of the increase in pressure inside? Chaz's reply makes sense. I can't write the equation, but if you take the normal boiling point equation and increase the vapor pressure at a given temperature, the boiling point would effectively change.

Pressure builds in the kettle. Its very unexciting.

Why, magic, my dear boy. Magic would happen.

7 RepliesWater in there that is a steam at lower pressure and same volume.
-
The pressure on the inside would increase.

Edited by Chaz: 5/13/2013 9:30:33 PMPressure inside the kettle would increase since the water is changing to gas but staying in a confined space. Eventually the force due to this pressure would probably break the kettle open. EDIT: Wait no the boiling point of the water would increase actually.

Edited by Boomdeyadah: 5/13/2013 8:36:37 PMPressure would build up inside the kettle from the steam, but it wouldn't be enough to cause a rupture.

I really like to put chocolate all over my tummy.

2 RepliesPressure would build in the kettle as more the air and water vapour got hotter and expanded, but I doubt there would be a rupture. Perhaps a minute distortion or bulging of the kettle?
