It is possible that the thing that "hit us", the thing that "no one knows exactly what" could in fact be the traveler. Maybe it's up to something.

I highly doubt that the Traveler is what hit us, as it is explicitly stated that we owe our lives to it. My idea is intended to play with the possibility of a potentially dangerous Traveler while not going against the statement that it saved us.

The overall story of the episode is very similar to Lttrz' theory. I'll summarise the plot...:
Voyager encounters a massive "array" orbiting an arid desert planet. The inhabitants of the planet live underground, where everything is provided for them by the mysterious array. It is later revealed that the array is home to a highly evolved alien known as "The Caretaker", who explains that his people accidentally turned the entire planet into desert. So they left the Caretaker to look after the inhabitants to pay for a debt that can never be repaid.
Very well could be the next iteration of the W'rkncacnter. Thankfully Bungie picks easier to pronounce names these days.

Eh, unpronouncability is a staple of eldritch abominations. I'm pretty sure that the W'rkncacnter are a species, or whatever counts as a species for a timeless emobiment of chaos.
