It originally wasn't a part of the pledge. It was added during the Cold War, around the same time "in god we trust" was put on our money. The United States was never intended to be an exclusively Christian nation. Religious people in power made it that way in the 1900's

I don't see why you have anything against that. My country is protestant and my college is catholic and I don't mind even though I'm actively anti religious

I don't mind at all, I just don't like being criticized for choosing not to say that I trust in god or am under god since I am pagan.

If they want you to say it then you have to say it. If you let them know that you are an atheist then you will be persecuted for the rest of your life because, unlike in England, people will persecute you if you are not either a Christian or a Jew.
