... Because he's not arguing what he thinks he's arguing. He still perceives the exact same thing as you. He's just calling it something else. Now, if he were on LSD and genuinely thought that a tree was a giraffe, then he can make an argument that he legitimately sees a giraffe. As it stands though, sounds like he's trying to sound smart by looking like a dumbass. My Xbox is white. Saying, 'No it isn't white. It is blanco,' does not mean it isn't white just because you're using a different word.

  • No, but this is the thing, I'd say, well it doesn't matter what you call it, it's still a tree or blah blah we still are seeing the same thing, he'd just say prove it. How do you know I don't see a giraffe there, how do you know that I can't see infrared? I'm just like, we physically can't see infrared. And then he says, well maybe I've had a mutation that allows me to see it, you can't prove I can't see it. Infuriates me. I can never argue against their arguments, because they don't really make sense and I just can't figure out a way to logically argue against them.
he'd just say prove it.
I'm not making fun of you I promise but I'm just curious... are you guys like... 10? Because that is the argument of a grade schooler and I would not hesitate to laugh in his face and call him a baby if he said that to me.
How do you know I don't see a giraffe there,
Because mass does not change based on the eyes of the person viewing it. What you see depends on the object and the material the light has to travel through- in this case air. Your eyes change the focus of the item, but the focus of something doesn't change its actual mass.
how do you know that I can't see infrared?
Because the wavelength of infrared is too long and the frequency too low for eyes to see.
I'm just like, we physically can't see infrared. And then he says, well maybe I've had a mutation that allows me to see it, you can't prove I can't see it.
If he wants to 'prove he can see infrared' then he has to prove it. The person making the claim has the burden of proof. Otherwise the kid is an idiot.

  • Nope, 11th grade. I understand the argument is retarded, I just get angry about how stupid the argument is, that I keep trying to win even though with the way he bends things I can't. I tell him his argument is retarded and he's stupid, and he just says, you're just mad you lost the argument, and then it starts over. And with the whole burden of proof, I tell him that and he's like, no I don't I don't have to prove anything. And I'm like, yes you -blam!-ing do! And he just insists he doesn't, so I just stop because that's retarded. He's one of the kids that gets bad grades, but insists he's smart, and just doesn't turn in his work.

  • Then I think you have to accept that he's just a moron, friend. Because by his logic, if he is right and doesn't have to prove anything, then you are also right and don't have to prove anything. And since the burden of proof is on him anyway... Look, the kid is honestly just... stupid, according to your posts. He sounds like the type of person that says God is real because, and ONLY because, you can't prove he isn't. To which you are free to direct him to Anselm's 'Greatest Conceivable Island' argument. Have him read a real philosopher, get bored because he doesn't understand it, then claim it was because the argument was 'stupid.'

  • Yeah, I'm pretty much done with those arguments. Like they were trying to tell me doctors aren't important, and that they'd rather have the scientists who found out about how to treat the illness or whatever treat them, instead of doctors. I'm like, you idiots, doctors are trained to preform the procedure, scientists research and find the treatments. Heck, you could say a doctor is a scientist. Like, and then they were saying that they could do the treatments on their own, and doctors are dumb. I know they were just messing with me at this point, but as someone going into the medical field, I simply stated, "You get in a car accident, smash your head against the driver's side windshield. You end up with a subdural hematoma, and need to preform a craniectomy. How are you going to do that yourself?" They had no good response to that, yet insisted they still won the argument.

He doesn't sound like much of a friend. Just call him a dumbass and walk away.

  • Exactly. You and your friend perceive the same thing, you are both seeing a brown, tall, green leafed mass and just because he was raised thinking it's a giraffe only means that he was raised calling it a different word, you're still both seeing the same thing.
