That's why I own an iPod Touch. It's a device that fits in my pocket that functions as a flashlight, calculator, web browser, gaming platform, MP3 player, camera, video recorder, voice recorder, note taker, and I keep the back of it constantly covered with the case I bought so I can occasionally remove the case and use it as a small mirror. :) It's a GREAT thing to have! But I got this thing as a christmas gift more than two years ago, and I've paid I total of $2 for apps since then. The cost of the device I have doesn't even come close to the cost of owning a smartphone.
