I'm in no way a law student but i think its pretty much common sense that a teacher or member of staff at a school have no right to search your phone.

That's what I think. I asked my design teacher if it was illegal, he said it wasn't. But I've yet to see anything on the net (I did a couple of hours research yesterday, and came up with nothing) explicitly confirming this.

I don't know if its illegal. Although if they "confiscated" your phone for a search then that is theft.

No, it's not. 99% sure school's reserve the right to be able to confiscate devices they have already deemed inappropriate. If I started texting in assembly, for instance, they're perfectly within their rights to confiscate it and not let me get it until a parent gets it at the end of the week (or whatever).

Are they? Never knew that. That is different from actually searching what is on your phone though. Pretty sure only the police can do that with a search warrant or something like that. Not to mention teachers would break loads of privacy laws
