Maybe I'm just a horrible Halo fan but I really haven't "understood" the story of Halo since Halo:CE. Can someone please explain this shit to me.

13 Replies in this Sub-ThreadDon't even bother. Give up. As a nerd big into expanded universe stuff, I honest to God gave 343i and Greg Bear (Forerunner trilogy author) the benefit of the doubt and read the first book, Cryptum. It was so hard to read, and this is coming from a freak who is currently binging all nine novels of The Legacy of the Force in a week. I love to read and I am GOOD at it, and I couldn't freaking understand the new canon 343i created for Halo. Between that and piss-poor Reach TU gameplay decisions, I've given up on Halo and I will never give 343i another dollar.

Edited by SquirrellyOtter: 5/2/2013 1:37:15 AMI'm sorry... did you miss that the disclaimer where I truthfully said I'm currently reading nine multi-hundred page novels of mind-bending philosophy? I'm not opposed to reading hard things. I actually savor hard things. But Cryptum was terribly written. It was an entire novel dedicated to exposition. It kept pulling all kinds of horseshit out of its ass at every possible turn, and it wasn't even done in a way that was actually readable. It should have never made it past an editor's desk. That's not hard sci-fi. It was a dark hole of men getting off on writing their own canonized fanfiction with no one who dared to say "no, that's a bad idea" or "no, that's poorly written" because Halo is a sacred cow of cash that no one should ever say no to. And I resent being personally insulted when you have no idea what my literary background is. Let me share some of the books I've read that people might consider "hard": ~Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind (it was a very long time ago, but I'm quite surprised in retrospect that my middle-school mind wrapped my head around the main plot points before my mom took it away because she belated realized there was a couple sexual slavery subplots in it) ~Ringworld by Larry Niven (looked like Halo, definitely was not Halo. Tech was cool though.) ~Grendel by John Gardner (deliciously mindbending piece of literature, honestly didn't strike me as hard to read yet everyone else in the class hated it) ~I, Q by John de Lancie (you want hard sci-fi that you need to re-read to understand? Give that sexy piece of Star Trek a shot, written from the point of view of an omnipotent entity about the end of the universe.) ~Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover (my favorite book of all time ever since I read it years ago. It takes a literary and emotional master to make readers sympathetic to Palpatine while making Mace Windu look like a villain.) ~Several books of the Shannara series by Terry Brooks (not exactly required reading in English class) ~Dozens of D&D 3.5 rulebooks and expansions (literally would check out the library's entire collection at one time. It was wonderful. Probably not so tough for this crowd, but in fairness there is a lot of story and math to balance in that game that average readers just would turn down.) I generally comprehended what was going on in Cryptum, I'm not a complete illiterate fool. But like I said, between it being poorly edited for readability and the entire novel being little more than exposition for 343i's fanboyism in the name of profits for Halo 4, the entire work was frankly repulsive, and I say that after reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I'm glad you like this kind of stuff, and apparently specifically Cryptum/the rest of the Forerunner Trilogy and Halo 4. Some suckers need to pay so Frank O'Connor can eat. I'm just saying I won't anymore, as I disagree with the direction he's taking an epic and historic franchise. And I believe I have also made clear on various posts why I disagree with some of the decisions 343i made concerning gameplay, which is infinitely more important than lore when we're talking about a game. Even if I was supportive of Frankie's new story, I still would ardently protest the bastardization of Reach that was the Combat Evolved Anniversary Title Update, and I saw nothing that convinced me that Halo 4 would be fun for me. Ultimately, that's why I gave up on Halo. When a game is no longer fun, you don't play it anymore. Please don't belittle my intellect for a difference in opinion when you know oh so little about me.

Edited by Lord of Admirals: 5/2/2013 1:48:26 AMMmmkay. I apologize for insulting you but I have to disagree completely. The Forerunner Saga is written from the point of view of a Forerunner. Having Greg explain every detail about Forerunner Civilization is ridiculous, especially if the main character is one. it would contradict believable characters. What was that about insulting? you just called me a sucker. Also, when I say, "Hard" I don't mean difficult, I mean Hardcore.
