Marriage is a religious institution. The state has no right to intervene. Ever heard of this crazy thing called Separation of Church and State?
English
-
That separation of church and state does not formally exist. I am atheist and happily married to my christian wife.
-
But marriage predates religion, try again.
-
I thought you would support gay marriage because you are gay.
-
That's strange seeing as how marriage has been around longer than religion.
-
lolno
-
That's a beautiful counterargument. Got anything to back up that claim? Formal marriage has been a thing for around 20,000 years. That is older than Babylon (possibly one of the first if not the first civilization.) That is older than the Epic of Gilgamesh (which included Gods and all that shit.) Sorry. Religion has been around awhile, but marriage has been around longer.
-
Religion has existed since the dawn of man.
-
Pretty sure cavemen didn't hold ceremonies in their caves saying, "In the beginning, which was yesterday, our new found cellular brothers that we are now eating on because survival of the fittest was made."
-
They didn't have formal marriage, either.
-
And marriage existed before religion was even thought up of an idea.
-
Either way, when marriage came about, it was not a religious thing.
-
So, if I get married in a church that's, let's say, Buddhist, and it's to a guy, then it's considered a marriage? Okay. Also, marriage has never been truly part of church alone. The government hands out benefits to married couples and anyone can get married anywhere because marriage is a fundamental right to the people. Marriages aren't made by Christians and Catholics alone. They have marriages in Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and pretty much every single religion.

So if marriage is a religious institution then how come people can get married without it being at a church or whatever? You can get married from the Justice of the Peace.
-
No, that's a civil union.
-
So if the church or individual conducting the marriage is fine with it the government can't ban it?
-
Edited by SecondClass: 4/29/2013 9:55:38 PMNo, the church itself has to be fine with it. If the Vatican changed its stance on gay marriage, it would be different.
-
And other religions are having absolutely and utterly none of that. Islam states "-blam!- -blam!-". It's quite bad. Christianity is probably the most liberal towards it actually.
-
Since when was the Vatican the head of every religion? Isn't religion personal? Also if marriage really is a religious ceremony, why are atheists allowed to get married?
-
1.) Any atheist who gets married is a hypocrite. 2.) The Vatican is technically the head of Christianity, which is the main religion that doesn't like queers.
-
Atheists are far less likely to divorce.
-
1) Do you forget that marriage is a legal title providing many benefits under the law? 2) No, the Vatican is the Head of Catholicism, and only Catholicism.
-
And this guy should know because he's God and invented the damn thing. So you should definitely listen to this guy.
-
And it should hold no legal benefits. I think that a marriage and a civil union should be not be mutually exclusive. If you're religious, go have a wedding then sign a civil union sheet and get benefits. If you're not religious, or gay, then just go sign a civil union sheet and get benefits.

Edited by God: 4/29/2013 10:24:35 PMI agree with this, the government shouldn't be involved with marriage at all, only deal in civil unions between people who live together or share property. Of course in that case marriage gets demoted to a simple case of semantics, without some form of legal contract anyone could just say they are married.
