I think it sends the wrong message to people to legalize drugs like that. "It's okay to kill yourself." It's illegal to attempt suicide, so why are hardcore drugs any different?

It's your right to commit suicide, no one is asking for drugs to be glamorized, just legalized.

  •
It's your right to commit suicide
I would love to see where this right is stated.

  • As much as you have a right to life you have the right to end your own live. You can do whatever you want to your own body. What authority does anyone have to stop you?

The government is in place to protect you from others and from yourself. The whole reason why we have police is to prevent people from causing harm to anyone. Most of the time, the people who attempt suicide don't realize how much hope is ahead of them. Just because we make it illegal doesn't mean that they're bad people. If you're caught trying to kill yourself, you're arrested to protect you and you're given help.

  • The government absolutely should not be protecting you from yourself, that applies to these drug laws also. We limited the power of government to ensure our freedoms. You're free to do whatever you want to your own body, harming others is not a freedom. I'm not saying suicide is the best option, people should do everything they can to stop it, but we have no authority and you get no credit of compassion when your method of dealing with it is unjust use of force. That is beyond worse.

  • I think that is a funny law. Not haha, but stupid kind of funny. I am completely against suicide, yet it is illegal to try it in some areas. Some people will do it regardless, and letting it be illegal only strengthens drug cartels. Let people try to be responsible with it on their own. Don't forget, in a time before they were illegal, there were regular people that used. If someone misuses it then that can easily be punishable, but taking decent people down just for using or holding is crazy. Yet you are right, on that side. Just remember though, not everybody that does drugs winds up dead.

  •
Some people will do it regardless, and letting it be illegal only strengthens drug cartels.
Wait... what? How is illegalizing suicide strengthening drug cartels? Oh wait, never mind. You're talking about drugs lol. But yeah, I'm kind of conflicted about the whole matter. The only reason drug cartels exist is because most drugs are illegal. You don't see any cigarette cartels. However, I think it reflects very badly on a society that tolerates people destroying themselves through use of heroine, cocaine etc. Back in the imperial age, China's citizens were becoming addicted to opium and the entire nation was basically high on it. What would come of us if we don't outlaw the root?

  • Pretty much what Camnator said. The generation of people currently in power focused on banning and outlawing things they didn't like instead of proper education. Instead of proper sex education and drug education they focused on fear masked as facts. They only tell you what will hurt you in an effort to scare you away. As Cam said, the key is education.

  • Education and awareness is key here. We are free to make their own choices. You can't say allowing humans to be free is ethically worse than infringing on them in the name of taking care of them. We have no authority to do this. In the '70s we significant reduced cigarette use by education, it didn't take an unjust law.
