Some animal research is perfectly fine, as it does no harm to an animal in anything but trivial criteria. But other animal research can cause permanent damage to an animal against its will(naturally).
In my neuro research class, we made lesions in the brains of rats to see if that area of the brain was crucial to developing anxiety responses. After the trial, we had them put down so we could examine their brains. This research was an attempt at better understanding PTSD so that we can treat war veterans and trauma victims better. As this does permanent damage to the animal but can give incredible results for people, is that not ok for you?
I'd say that if it were absolutely necessary for you to put down the rats for this case(in a humane manner), that would be fine. I'm pretty open to medical research.
