• I just hate it when they follow a specific pattern and you are forced to attack them only at a certain time.

PROBLEM being PROBLEM Yes, boss fights are too videogamey. They get in the way of superior artistic vision. It's the same reason autodialogue is such a fantastic system. In general, video games are too videogamey. Books as well. There's just too much getting in the way of artistic integrity. The next time I write a book I will write 400 blank pages because putting words on would constrict my integrity and make it too videogamey. OT: Boss fights can either be done incredibly well or incredibly poorly. Most of the time I prefer a boss "wave" of sorts, followed by a cinematic where the main antagonist is defeated. Otherwise it just ends up feeling underwhelming to me.

    • The concept of boss battles is an old skool gaming tradition. Some are genuinely awesome, intense and rewarding but others can fall short. Like anything else, it all comes down to their design.

    • Bosses can be incredibly gimicky and break immersion like crazy, but when they are well designed they do not, and if they are too "videogamey" that's not always a bad thing depending on the game you want to create.

    • The -blam!- are you talking 'bout? Can you explain? 'Cause I don't know what you mean by "videogamey".

    • -blam!- no, bosses are the main point in most video games, and they should stay that way. bosses are built as the transition point for game difficulty and should represent the challenge a game has otherwise you're just facing waves of the exact same type of enemies. I could never, for example, see a RPG or Sonic-like games without boss battles that show off the game's flair and prowess, and the scale of the game. imagine Green Hill Zone without robotnik/eggman in his machine facing off with sonic and instead just a jump to the next level? Or Pokemon without the gym battles? or MegaMan without the robot masters/mavericks? Bosses are key in video games and they help progress the story along with the difficulty curve and are integral to almost any game series.

    • Could you explain what do you mean by ''videogamey''? Do you mean by too retro?

    • It's a -blam!-ing video game! Of course boss fights are 'video-gamey' and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

    • Back in in the more "retro" style of games, boss fights were everything and are supposed to provide a sudden burst of excitement and get the adrenaline pumping (depending on the boss)
