I wonder if there will be a non-visible "flag" on the more-secured accounts to indicate that they are not being treated like they are "disposable". Not only would the 2-step verification help MS and its services that use the account ID's, if the accounts are flagged, it would help non-MS sites/services (even this site) to note that an account has more "trustability" because the account creator has invested more time and effort into securing their account.

  • Would they would just be classified differently than those that are throwaway accounts? I can see that it may be easier for website admins to detect which accounts aren't "trustworthy" accounts, but even on bungie.net, the webteam doesn't have access to each user's MS login data, just the contact email for verifying your account, I believe.

  • I am envisioning just a single bit flag attached to the account to indicate that the account is "more secured" than an account that is not using 2-step. If MS sets 2-step to be an opt-in or and opt-out process, I can't imagine that people who create armies of disposable MS accounts would then bother going through the process of 2-step for each of those accounts that they intend on throwing away as soon as it no longer serves its purpose. So, some sort of flag or other non-visible indicator that the account is a 2-step could/would allow other services that use/allow MS accounts for sign-on to decide for themselves what (for them) is the differences between a 2-step account and a non-2-step account. For example, just like this site used to add trust to an account that had a linked gamertag, and that criteria was also used to allow/deny posting abilities in Optimatch, our hosts here "could" potentially see some value in knowing that an MS account (if it is used/linked to the Bungie account) is using MS's 2-step verification. It's just a sign of user/owner investment, but that investment (of time, effort and cross-referenceable contact) would seem, at least to me, to be something that I would expect from a member/user who values that account and not someone who created it for short term personal gain.

  • Ah, makes more sense now. It makes me curious about Sony's line of action in the future. I've been looking around for something and I've come up short, especially with the massive PSN outage in May 2011 (honestly surprised they haven't done it, and since bungie.net supports PSN, Facebook and Google+ now). People who only make those throw away accounts definitely aren't going to go through the hassle of 2 step verification for a temp use. I'm not even sure with the current system you CAN, as I believe each one has to have a different phone number, I'd have to check though.
