College VS. going into the workforce after High School

As my five year class reunion is coming up, there has been one question I've been pondering over quite often. Should I have went to college like most of my classmates, or did I do the right choice by hitting the ground running and going straight into the workforce? I mean, by skipping college, I did save myself a ton of student debts, but I missed out on some good things like meeting new exciting people or maybe even going to a different state to study, the whole "college experience" if you will. On the other hand, I was able to find a decent job early so I could get some money in my pockets, gain valuable knowledge, and some work experience. I worked my way up to better positions and ultimately, obtained a very good job I currently hold. I had a 4 year head start over my fellow college graduates. Hell, most of them can't even find a job they deem "is up to their standards". So they continue their education to get their masters or sit at their parents house whining and moping. I guess when I think about it, at least for me, I would do the exact same thing over again. Throughout my years in the workforce, I have gained an abundance of knowledge and skills, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. All joking aside, I would like to hear your opinions. What do you think? What are your plans after high-school, or if older, what did you do? Would you change anything you did?

  • If you have a 'real' job, or a job that will lead to a career, you can make it work without college. All depends on what you're doing with your time if you skip college, and like you said you avoid all the debts. I.e. if i wanted i could skip college, keep working at my dad's business, and eventually own it if i wanted to.

  • Like you and others have said it entirely depends what you like and want to do.

  • It depends entirely on what you went into after high school and what you would have chosen as a major in college. Obviously if you went to college and became a lawyer making hundreds of thousands a year, college is the better road. If you went and got a general studies degree, not so much. My dad has had a great career despite no college education, while my mom has had an equally successful career with an 8 year degree. Depends entirely on the person in question.

  • I think that if you're happy and feel that you've made a good choice (there's really no right or wrong to be seen in that particular choice), then that's what mostly matters.

  • Sounds like you made the right choice.. And that is what I am doing. I have very few friends that are staying afloat in College and others who are sitting at home, no job and in debt and the others who paid the debt off and went into the military. I'm saving money and building up my credit.
