Eh, it'd be alright if they'd have titled it "Superiguana" or "Giant Velociraptor attacks New York to cash in on the Jurassic Park dinosaur craze", or called it a remake of the "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" or something.
But that's not -blam!-ing Godzilla. Toho even made it canon in the millennia continuity just so that it could be NOT Godzilla. In the Japanese films it's called "Zilla", appears once in Godzilla Final Wars and gets vaporized by the real Godzilla within 10 seconds of appearing on screen. Which it deserves.
I wouldn't call this respectful. I'd call it absolute pwnage.
The issue isn't whether or not Toho showed respect, either. The problem is that the Americans filmmakers showed ZERO respect for Toho's Godzilla. I think it was extremely generous of them to give America another shot, and I'm really anticipating Godzilla 2014.
