As for keeping a gun under your pillow, if you lived in or around Memphis and were poor as this family apparently is, you'd want to keep a gun under your pillow too.

    Memphis is pretty bad. [url=http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/tn/memphis/crime/]Stats[/url] I can't think of any many cities with worse violent crime, especially non-tourist towns. Memphis has some tourism but I don't think it is as big a driver as it used to be. Areas like Myrtle Beach or Atlantic City probably have higher crime rates but I'd bet most of that crime is on tourists not locals. Though I misread the original OP and saw they were airlifted to Memphis, not taken by ambulance. So I don't know how far from Memphis they are. But I'm willing to bet the doctors at Memphis hospitals have had plenty of gunshot experience at this point.
