From what I've gathered since the initial announcement of Destiny, Bungie wants the player to be able to create a character entirely unique to them. To me, this means stats will most likely not be tied to any one race (or armor, for that matter) because that limits the opportunity for customization. For example, let's say I want to be a Warlock. If the Awoken have the highest "mana" than the other races at the beginning of the game, they're the obvious choice for anyone who's going Warlock. What that does is put any Warlock who doesn't chose the Awoken at a disadvantage. This scenario is something I'm assuming Bungie will want to avoid, considering they seem to be promoting customization over all else.

  • I think there should be racial disadvantages and advantages. Say a awoken has more mana for the warlock and the exo has less, but on the flip side the awoken takes more dmg while the exo takes less. So being an exo warlock could be great. Still use the magic while still able to take a solid hit. But who knows, we don't even know how the game is played other than FPS

  • We know now that each race will play the same, the only difference being their outwardly appearance.

  • Where did you read/hear that? I can't find anything about and would love to learn more.

It was in this post-GDC interview.
Chris Barrett: When we were talking about how that process would work and the choices the players would have, we knew if we gave somebody a choice and then betrayed that choice later down the road, that would be bad. We wanted players to just go on gut. What do they like the look of? What sounds cool to them? And not betray that in any way. We don't want to make something where a character plays very differently, or isn't what they thought what they were getting. That tied in to that process. We want to give people whatever they want to play in that world and not have any negative side effects. Joe Staten: Making it up front and quick and largely emotional, and nothing that's going to, later down the line, make you feel like you made the wrong choice. You're going to make this gut emotional choice: 'I'm going to look at that robot and I'm going to look at that more exotic space elf and I'm going to look at that human and I like... robot.' It's like, bam. I'm going to be a robot. And there's nothing about being a robot that's going to play any different from the other two. We want to make it immediate and quick and gut, for sure when it comes to race, and then make sure we don't screw you down the line. Chris Barrett: We didn't want to give a plus eight bonus or whatever it is, that people are going to be like, 'Oh, I made the wrong choice! I've got to start over.' That always sucks.
When it comes to bonuses and stat boosts related to character race, this sort of thing is almost unavoidable. WoW is the best example of how this can be bad. For example, in WoW the Tauren race naturally had more health than the other races, meaning that a tank (damage-absorbing character) who wan't a Tauren was automatically at a disadvantage. Other races had abilities that benefited certain classes, but not others. It was never anything major, but still there. If the races in Destiny only differ in appearance, we avoid this sort of situation, but at the same time, lose an extra layer of depth when it comes to character personalization. Myself, I'd rather put up with the slight imbalance that some race/class combos may experience than lose the feature altogether. It strikes me as removing features and some of the fun factor for the sake of balance. This changes when you bring competitive multiplayer into the picture, but that's a discussion for a different thread. Keep in mind that I'm only speculating here; I'm a fan, not an employee.

  • I personally am a very customization-oriented guy, so racial bonuses do not really appeal to me. While they do add another level of depth to character creation, I don't like my creativity to be restrained because I chose the worst "race-class" combo. I would prefer a very in-depth leveling system, so I can develop my character with bonuses and skills that benefit me, rather than have to deal with what bonuses my race has to begin with. Either way, it's more a question of opinion than anything. Do you want unrestrained customization or a deeper character creation? On another note, it may be interesting to start a poll asking what the community would prefer. Although it won't change anything, It would be interesting to see what the community wants.

  • I like the idea of racial bonuses because it works well with lore, but I also don't like feeling like I'm forced to choose a certain race because they have something that enhances my preferred style of play (sniping). At the end of the day, I realize it's better to not have racial bonuses, but I still kinda want them. Don't listen to me, I'm just confused.

  • I thought it was kind of obvious that each race does have a unique ability, but nothing that would hinder gameplay like that. Making the Awoken have higher mana than the other classes is just too much. Other RPJ's don't even go that far. Take WoW for example. Their racials are something like the ability to reduce fall damage or the ability to cloak when not in combat.

  • My fear was Skyrim level bonuses, like unlimited water breathing or 25% resistance to magic. Regardless, it's been confirmed that the only difference between the races is how they look. Each race will function exactly the same when it comes to gameplay, which is something I'm really glad about.

  • Yeah I'm hoping they can avoid this too as it will just bottleneck any creativity in your character! Everyone will simply choose the same armour sets because they have the best stats, the same races for particular classes etc etc i would rather go for aesthetics when it comes to the look of your character and then you level your character on how you play a la an improved skyrim/oblivion system?

  • Quite honestly, I don't know how Bungie's going to approach character leveling in Destiny. I can't even speculate considering we know nothing about the actual gameplay in Destiny. I'd assume the system would be pretty in-depth, again taking into consideration the push Bungie is making for uniqueness in Destiny. Leveling a character to fit your exact playstyle is something I'm hoping for and expecting out of Destiny, but we'll have to wait and see.
