mao zedong was an atheist and he killed more people than all the crusades combined.
furthermore, the catholic church is possibly the only reason why all progress before the dark ages wasn't lost.
some people are afraid of a world with religion, but im terrified of what the world would look like without religion.

His atheism is not the reason why he killed so many people, it was his economic policy. Correlation=/=Causation

i never said it was. i was using mao as an example that a world without religion can be horrible as well.
-
I see your point.

Edited by MastaSin: 4/1/2013 12:13:48 AMHypatia was a pagan that got killed by a christian mob. Tell me how religion doesn't make us less evil?

i never said religion doesnt lead to horrible things. in far too many times it does, but people focus too much on all the bad things religion has brought us while ignoring all the good things its given us.

Edited by manwith: 4/1/2013 12:11:29 AMPeople would become savages. N-azi Germany and Communism in general are good examples what happens when people abandon all their religion related values.

Regardless of how many people he killed, more people have been killed due to religious conflict.

Edited by darkcrusader117: 4/1/2013 12:22:48 AMmost conflicts stem from economic or political reasons. religion is just thrown into a lot of these conflicts as an excuse.

Naw man, that aint right.
mao zedong was an atheist and he killed more people than all the crusades combined.
To be fair, weren't his deaths due to a great famine across their nation as a result of his horrible economic policies that he refused to change for fear of looking silly, not a mass genocide?
furthermore, the catholic church is possibly the only reason why all progress before the dark ages wasn't lost.
Perhaps I'm mistaken as I've never really studied it, but weren't the Dark Ages were caused by the Church, and it was just the work of isolated monks/priests that kept the information in tact after saving much of it from Rome?

and the Islamic people kept and recorded a lot of scientific stuff. We owe much of our world today to them. And I remember a friend of mine told me that when countries IQ's get higher, religion gets smaller

the dark ages were started by barbarians sacking roman cities and burning down a great deal of the libraries. the catholic church, however, made a large attempt to save many of the documents and later became the most reliable place for people to become educated and literate allowing them to carry out future scientific research while being able to write down their findings. if the church wasn't there many of the accounts of roman and Greek historians as well medical knowledge, philosophical writings and poetry would have been lost in western Europe. as for mao zedong, yeah a lot of it was due to famine but he also waged genocide against many of chinas citizens, particularly the intellectuals.
