Yes, It would take the "because my religion"-argument away. After that if you were to assault a gay guy you'd be just considered trash.
Think about the world with out religion:
No Inquisition(etc religious torture)/religious discrimination
No Religious war/ terrorism
MUCH less bigots
No idiots arguing against science!
YES, the world would be a better place.
The problem is that getting rid of it will be difficult. It's just like Marx said; Opium of the people. And as with any addiction, it's bloody hard to get rid of.

There are many religions that go hand in hand with science just so you know. I know a few that encourage looking into science, and one in particular that doesn't disagree with any scientifically proven theory that we have today. And there will always be idiots. And there will always be people arguing against science, and within science. There are so many different positions on so many different topics that we have today within the scientific community itself. Even though all scientific experiments almost always result in the advancement of science in some way or another, simply getting rid of religion will not take away arguments against rational and logical statements. Terrorism is terrorism. Let terrorists say what they want, they only kill to kill, or because they're decieved, not because of any religious purpose. While religious discrimination will go away, other types of discrimination will not. Take the KKK for example. "Bigots" will exist and reproduce regardless of whatever stupid thing they might believe in. YOLO SWAG 4/20

And I know people who can drive drunk safely. Should we allow that to? And what religions are you talking about? because science doesn't go hand to hand with any religion. And the difference between scientific debate and an idiot trash mouthing evolution is that the idiot has a bible in his hand. Terrorim is terrorism? genius.. so the muslims who took a plane to WTC just wanted to randomly kill people? That's retarded. They had been mind-blam!-ed by religion all their lives and when they hit that wall they were making themselves ready for the 72 virgins waiting for them. That's religion for you. KKK was heavily christian... visit Wikipedia. yes, there will always be bigots but eliminating religio would eliminate religious bigots. So, all my claims stand.

Did you not read my post? As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, it should be fine. Sorry for not clarifying for you. I'm implying that as long as it doesn't hurt anyone AND have the potential to hurt anyone. What religion? Look around you! Read up on religions first before assuming every religion is like Christianity. Islam, for one, has no qualms with science, endorses it, and says nothing that goes against the laws of science. The muslims took a plane to the WTC because that's what their leader told them to do. Do you have any idea how leaders even find potential terrorists? They take kids from families that can't care for them, and say that they will take care of them instead of the family, so the kid could have a happy life. Of course, for a poor parent in the middle east this sounds great, but after they take them to their "base", it's all about teaching the kid the messed up thought process, and how anyone who doesn't think what they think deserves to die, and how America is a terrible place. You honestly think terrorists in the middle east read the Islamic holy book? Hah! And by saying KKK, I meant that there will be OTHER forms of discrimination if you took religion away, such as racial discrimination, LIKE THE KKK DOES. And getting rid of a few religious bigots doesn't change anything. The only way to get rid of stupidity is to get rid of it all. It's like trying to moldy part of cheese. It doesn't matter than you got rid of one moldy piece, the mold is still going to grow if you don't take it all off.

Edited by Saphir Eagle: 4/1/2013 12:49:49 PMYou still failed to provide me an example. Religions that contradict reality will always be harmful at some point and if some creed doesn't contradict reality, it isn't really a religion at all. And oh, I didn't know that Islam supports evolution and the big bang, doesn't include beliefs in miracles, supports gender equality and is essentially atheism. How did I miss that? Please stop giving me that bs about islam and get your head out of your arse and btw, 'murica is a terrible place.. And the point was that it would DECREASE the amount of discrimination, not eliminate it. same goes for bigotry.

Holy hell! Look at those links you posted! The media really has it's hands on you doesn't it? What's this? Well would you look at that?! Gender equality you say? Anything else? Ooh! I know! The expansion of the universe! You see, the people who calim to be Muslim on the media, very rarely are. All those terrorists groups aren't muslim. They don't follow the basic laws that their holy book sets in place. Is your version of a muslim reallly a terrorist? The two links that you posted is what that's implying. And if that's the case, then YOU need to get your head out of your ass. Quit being the media's bitch.

Edited by Oort: 3/31/2013 9:44:42 PMPeople would still be bigots without religion. Since when does reading a book that tells you to love your neighbor and be nice to people cause bigotry, war and violence? Many religious people are certainly bad people; it's not because of religion but in spite of it.

I was about to destroy you but as batman already did it, just look below

Orly.

The bible also tells its readers to stone gays and tells stories of god commiting genocide and supporting hebrews killing people by the thousands. This gave those war mongering bigots an excuse to do what they do.
-
It gave them an excuse; the propensity towards violent and bigoted actions was inherent and not inspired by a historical text--in a different context you would likely find the same insinuation preposterous. It's important to remember that the old testament is rather superseded by the new testament. The coming of Jesus was a major turning point because with it came the acknowledgement of a particular biblical conundrum: every human being was born with sin and thus was condemned to hell. Christ's thing was that he offered salvation despite our imperfections--gays, for example, are no better or worse than anyone else because they're no worse than everyone else, all sinners. Religion can be used to justify many bad things, but it is not the cause of these things. It can also be a force of good. All I know is that I go to a church every Sunday where a very conservative pastor--and an undeniably nice guy--talks about how we should be nice and respectful to everyone, including gays, liberals and militant atheists, because we're all in the same boat.
-
Salvation? From a fate he condemned us to in the first place? And before you say its my choice it was his first to decide that the unsaved should suffer far greater pain than the sin they committed for all eternity. And the fact that he claims to "love us" and does nothing to change that fate in a better way.
-
That's not how it works at all.
-
Do explain then. Why billions would burn in an eternal lake of fire for not choosing to believe in a religion that in the first place hasnt at all been proved to be true with little evidence for and in fact with a few scientific facts and theories against it. Explain how Im wrong.
-
I'm going to put this in more abstract terms because I understand it's a little much to grasp if you take everything literally. Hell doesn't have to be a literal lake of fire--when faced with the oblivion that comes with death, what will your life have meant? What if heaven is merely facing oblivion having lived a moral, fulfilling and spiritual life? Some people--judge them if you must--need to feel that there's some eternal reward; if you ask me, virtue is its own reward: without it what is there in life? It's very difficult to accept that there is no significance in life--perhaps even without religion you have attempted to deny that as I'm sure everyone does at some point. When nihilism is followed to its logical conclusion, it only makes sense to say that anything you sincerely believe is truth because there is no such thing as absolute reality. When you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back at you. Nietzsche found truth, but did he find happiness?
-
Well thats an interesting way to put it. So your input is that hell is just oblivion? Nothingness and heaven is the choice to get to live eternally?
-
There's a whole spectrum of beliefs on that subject. Some think that hell is literally eternal torture and heaven literally has streets paved with gold. Others view it as mere symbolism, that the eternal punishment is your own guilt and eternal life describes the joy of God's presence in some abstracted state of afterlife. To me, both heaven and hell represent oblivion; heaven is simply having lived one's short life on earth with a belief in some higher purpose.
-
Still if it is eternal torture/streets of gold kind of thing then its still shitty.
