Why "fake" the collapse instead of just causing a real one? What is the logic?

Steel doesn't need to melt to weaken substantially, you can try it for yourself in your backyard with a small wood fire. Add weakened steel the weight of the buildings and massive structural damage and it will fall, I remember watching it live. They stayed up long enough for thousands to escape, those two towers put up one hell of a fight.
