YES!
It is a VERY well made show. Keep in mind the "Science" in the science fiction of the show is nothing more than plot convenience. It is a character driven drama in a military setting. It deals with real world issue, and takes you to some pretty dark places. (in one instance you are rooting for a suicide bomber)
Around season 3 it becomes more spiritual and has a plot twist that will leave you standing and pointing at the TV quietly saying "You gotta be shitting me!" over and over again for about 15 minutes.
The only negative part is it has a Mass Effect 3 feeling to the ending. You get some closure, but it leave a lot of questions unanswered.

Is there an enemy as terrifying as the Reavers in it?
-
Yes and no. The main enemy is extinction. All but about 15,000 people die in the first episode. There is never enough food or water. The pressure of this is what provides the drama. You feel it in the show. Don't mistake it, its a drama. There are some great action sequences. The way space combat is show is outstanding. But, when everything is done, the show is a drama.

Do the characters work well together? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I'd rather not go into it too blind.
-
Very much so. But not in the way Firefly does. Firefly is reminiscent of the old serials that Star Wars was based off of. The story arc is just very different. That means the characters will be different as well. They go through changes, nearly none are the same when the show ends. All that said, they do work well together.

Well I'm sold. I just hope I cam get engrossed in this universe as much as I did in Fireflys'.
