I think it is interesting but I don't want to be ruled by a monarch, I want a government that serves me and the interests of the people.

Your lack of understanding of how a modern monarchy works is rather entertaining.

Edited by Spartan Ken 15: 3/22/2013 3:16:40 PMAll they do is sit around and collect tax money from their ancestral land. I think the only purpose of the monarchy now is more of a cultural thing. But, I like living in a democracy. I do think the Monarchy is neat with it's history and lineage.
-
Actually all the money that comes from their land goes to the Government and then the government pays them a portion of money which is effectively their wage. It has been that way since the the American Revolution, so while the Royals take for example £40 million a year, the Government receives lets say £400million from the Royal Land. So really the government and by extension the population win, which includes lower taxes.

>implying that a monarchy and a democracy are mutually exclusive.
-
One is where the leader rules with little to no say by the people, the other is ruled by elected officials to best protect their self interests.
-
200 years ago, maybe. Like I said, you seem to have very little understanding of how a modern monarchy works.
-
Your right, I don't, because I live under a democratic government.
-
Yea being able to rig the votes = democratic. Don't believe me? Romney tried to get as few democrats to vote as possible by making republican states limit the voting requirements which where aimed at the democrat voters.

dude, I am joking. :) I know the Monarchy is mostly just for English heritage
-
That's good. That behavior wouldn't surprise me by some people this website, but I thought you were better than that. Good to know you are.

Here is the deal, I think the Monarchy is culturally significant and I know they still have some, minor, power. But in general, many Americans would NOT like a monarch or king because our country was founded by individual freedoms and the people having a say and voice in how they are ruled.
-
But they're not mutually exclusive. I live in Belgium. We're a monarchy. The only thing the King still does is sign every law in order for it be put in effect. If he refuses to, the legislative power can put him aside and sign it themselves. We're a democracy. We have a Senate and a Chamber of Representatives, all elected by the the people themselves. If anything, we're probably more of a democracy than the US, as your senators are far less representative of the people who put them there. We also don't have a "winner takes it all" policy, like you do when it comes to presidency and how someone can be elected president with less than 30% of the population voting for him. There are 8 major political parties here (as opposed to just 2 in the US) and they all get a say equal to the amount of votes they receive.
-
I would assert that Queen Elizabeth II has done more in the interests of the people than most of Congress put together.
-
So true, people would probably vote for them if they could instead the idiots in the other 3 parties. I mean 60 years of political experience must have it's advantages.
