Ha well is anyone surprised by this? Shame they couldn't be bothered to finish the game, but that Spectre thing is easily the ugliest Covenant vehicle of them all. "Guys we need a new Covenant warthog for Halo 4. What should we do?" "Hmm.... It's pretty late on a Friday..... Why don't we just mindlessly mash the Spectre and Revenant together and not give a shit what it looks like, and whatever comes out... that's the new vehicle!" "Do it." Man that thing is ugly as sin. I feel dirty knowing that this shape exists. It's the same mentality that thinks that if chocolate tastes good and tuna tastes good then they must taste good mixed together.

Because there was content that was made and was cut for X reason, likely a lack of resources to see it to completion or a potential game breaking bug during crunch before Gold hits, doesn't mean that the game is unfinished. Or would you consider Reach unfinished as well because all the animals except for the Moa, Guta and rats got cut?

  • One mans butthurt is another mans gutted disappointment. You see the game as being finished, and I see a half-completed game. There's a reasonable limit where a person can think "This game is complete", and Halo 4 falls way below that mark. It is a shame they couldn't be bothered to finish the game, that they didn't want to prioritize the integrity and idea behind the game rather than buckling to the deadline and to the hand that feeds them.

  • I wonder if that scenario happened frequently during development. Sure, Halo 4 looks all shiny and pretty but holy hell the art direction for Halo 4 is garbage.

  • I've honestly thought about this a lot. I'm with you on the art direction for Halo 4, it's just not there whatsoever. I just get the sense that whoever was the art director for the game had no idea what they were doing, resulting in a game with an art style that has no focus. On one hand 343i insisted on changing a lot of classic designs that either didn't require changing or didn't make sense to change. And on the other hand they just couldn't be bothered to change the designs even slightly and so direct copy-pasted vehicles and weapons from Reach into H4 without thinking for a second that it paints an inconsistent picture. So on one hand extreme unnecessary change and on the other hand cutting corners and copy-pasting. When I look at things like the Pelican I get a strong sense that the art direction was not there and mostly consisted of pointing at other things that exist and saying "copy that bit, oh and that bit too". The Pelican has always been a great classic sturdy looking piece of mechanical art, it looks functional, it's got great lines, it suits the role within the Halo universe. A tough dropship that can take a beating but ultimately is outgunned by the Covenant equivalent, hence all the crashing. But with Halo 4 this happened; "Hey, so we need to spruce up the Pelican for Halo 4" "Oh really? We're copying the Banshee and Scorpion from Reach, why not the Pelican?" "Well we just really feel we need to completely redesign it, just like with the Dawn and the Chief." "Right..... so what are you thinking?" "Well I really like Harrier jumpjets and I really like those russian Hind helicopters too." "..." "Oh and I really like lumpy airplanes that don't look aerodynamic, OH and I really think it needs more air intakes. Spaceships should have lots of air intakes right? Stick some weapon lockers on the outside too. Weapon lockers are so much more useful on the outside of a dropship, rather than on the inside..... where the Marines would be." "Ok great. I'll do this and then work on the Warthog and then the Spectre."
