Stop hating on cod. No offense, but a lot of the games in the game industry owe a lot to call of duty just like a lot of games owes a lot to halo. Stop bashing cod. The evidence that cod is a great game series is against you, it's just your opinion. Cod isn't the best game series in the world, but it's still good, and it's sales support that statement I just made. Also, the bungie staff used to have a COD modern warfare 3 team and they would play cod for fun when they got the time too.

the game industry owes cod????? how do you figure when cod owes moh?? or are you even old enough to know that moh was the first?? maybe all fps games owe goldeneye?? just because cod makes billions of dollars doesnt make it great. if anything the cod sales figures are a disgrace to the gaming industry, they show that you can make a few changes and sell the same thing year after year and that "most" gamers arent interested in changes or challenges or new ideas or anything, because cod has never had any of that, its been the same thing over and over for years.

Edited by Arbiter 739: 3/14/2013 9:51:50 PMI'm not going to argue, but I think you might have misunderstood the article somewhat. It was about how the developers of Red Orchestra 2 found that players who couldn't stand playing their game for the exact reason of not being similar enough to CoD were generally very poorly skilled players. They believed it was due to the large hip fire cones, hit-scan guns, constant rewarding, and the fact that it takes very little skill to get kills. Personally I don't think it's much of an epidemic or anything, but I'd be similarly upset as the game developers did when they got wind about how a large chunk of their complainers suck at shooters in general. I think it's an anomaly.

I'm just a bit upset about how people judge cod when actually it has done a lot for the industry. I do understand that everybody has their opinions though.

What does the industry owe CoD? It did nothing to help the industry. Halo did, on the other hand, because Halo basically was like "Here's the base for future FPS games." Whereas before Halo, shooters on a console just weren't good at all, with a few exceptions, like Goldeneye, for example.

-basic controls for a shooter -first fully realized ranking system -first shooter elected for next gen graphics -first shooter to gain popularity on consoles -also assisted with the transformation of modern day matchmaking Once again we actually owe a lot. Bungie also realizes this, and it was a normal thing to team up with Activision who published the COD games, because call of duty, just like halo has done a lot

Edited by White Tiger 380: 3/15/2013 12:26:51 AMFirst of I'm going to say that I don't hate Call of Duty. I will occasionally put in Black Ops II and I do think it's a relatively good game and good series. I'd like to say something about what you say that CoD has contributed. "-basic controls for a shooter" Basic seems like the wrong word here. But I think I understand that you're trying to say that most console shooters use similar control schemes now, as they should. That control scheme is very nice, but I wouldn't count it as a major contribution. It's convenient, but doesn't really improve games, just keeps them from having an awkward control scheme ruin them. "-first fully realized ranking system" I believe that award goes to the Halo 2 trueskill system. "-first shooter elected for next gen graphics" I don't know if this is true or not, but regardless they have sub par graphics now. In each CoD installment the graphics improve just enough to keep up with competitors but I've never once caught myself saying that any of it looks good. "-first shooter to gain popularity on consoles" Halo. Halo basically brought shooters to the consoles. Before Halo, if you wanted a good shooter you would go to PC. CoD is the most popular shooter, and the first to reach the popularity it has attained, but far from the first popular shooter on consoles. "-also assisted with the transformation of modern day matchmaking" yet again Halo 2 trueskill I believe was a greater contribution, but I'm not sure what you are talking about specifically here. On the other hand, Call of Duty has influenced many other game developers to put certain features into their games (perks, killstreaks/scorestreaks, custom classes). Many of these though, cause mixed reaction among players. It causes a rift between casual players who like to be able to customize everything, go in and have fun (those are the players talked about in the article) and the hardcore players that want to have everyone play on equal terms, and want to earn their kills with skill and by working for them. Neither is wrong, but the casual players brought in by Call of Duty now far outnumber competitive players, thus developers are going to tend to the casual players and make games with CoD features. Personally, I do like my custom classes and killstreaks, but I also like working for my kills. I don't want be able to do well unless I actually get good at the game. Yet again I do not hate CoD. Sorry for the rant, I hadn't intended for such a long post.

Your first point goes to Halo, because halo set the standard for console shooters Everything else came before CoD (even the whole controls thing, but Halo nailed it for consoles), and is irrelevant.
-
Lets not continue to argue though. We could argue for hours over this, even days and months. It's pointless to continue arguing. I disagree with u on some things, but I will agree with u that halo is the better game and that it also has done a lot for the game industry.
-
Your opinion is okay. Don't get me wrong, I love halo and halo has done a lot, but so has cod. Research will prove it. Hell, if you we're to ask me which is the better game I would say halo, that still doesn't make me change my mind over what is fact.

It's not fact though, Halo made shooters on console a thing in 2001, Halo 2 made online matchmaking on consoles popular in 2004. COD online popularity came around in 2007, before that it had a Niche fanbase and wasn't really popular. COD made a lot of money but it has essentially drawn such a massive casual crowd that hardcore competitive games aren't made any more because they won't sell 10 million copies. Everything that Halo built, COD destroyed and that's the point of the article, whether it's popular or not we owe COD nothing at all.
