Reminder: Marriage is a practice that has been used in multiple religions under different names. If gays truly wanted equal rights as heterosexual couples, they would be fighting for the same tax benefits under Civil Unions and be fighting for heterosexual couples to get Civil Unions also. That is where it would make more sense as they would still be fighting for Equality, but there would be no separate but equal clause cause everyone could get Civil Unions, and it would keep with the notion of Separation of Church and State. But no one listens to Ian, his ideas just make too much sense for the common folk.

  • you'd still have the separate but equal problem, just over religion instead of sexual orientation. it'd be much simpler to just have marriage for everyone and there being no difference between a religious and non-religious marriage except for the religious practices.

  • It makes more sense just to let them marry. It's far more simple than changing civil unions and switching people over.

  • Calling them civil unions and not marriages but giving them the same rights is LITERALLY "separate but equal".

He's saying get rid of marriage, replace it with CUs. Marriage is a religious institution, and therefore the gov't should not be dealing with marriages, as it effectively endorses a religious practice. Churches, which are private institutions, are then free to "marry" whomever they wish according to their beliefs. Problems: solved.

Marriage is hardly a solely religious thing anymore. The colloquial definition of it is basically a Civil Union, why change the name? Also: We don't call it different things in legal documents just because that person may be of a culture or faith that calls it something else, do we? So why change it all now just because of the inclusion of gay people?

  • To right a rather old wrong. It's very simple: marriage came from religion, and if you believe in true separation of church and state, you don't think the gov't should be handing out marriages. If you don't believe in that separation, then you shouldn't have a problem with gays not being allowed marriage. Pick one.

  • Why even call it something different if you're just going to make Civil Unions exactly equal to marriage?
