They both are good looking companions. So would you say Tom Baker's Doctor is a good place to start with if you want to get exposed to the older part of the series?
A great place to start. He had a darkness, a frivolity and an energy that really captured the Doctor.
I have all of the serials (that I can find, some are lost forever) and have been watching them in sequence (from 1963 to the present). It really is a roller-coaster of a series. Sometimes good, sometimes painfully bad, sometimes clever, sometimes camp.
But the more you know about the earlier incarnations, the more the current ones seem to have even more depth. The actors (or the writers) do a really good job of trying to keep the character complex, yet contiguous.
