Ok well Destiny is mainly a co-op game, but it has been stated that you will be able to play a single player game. People don't always want to be online all the time and sometimes they can't anyway. Internet connections going off, people pulling plugs out and so on.
I fear that the mere mention of "always-online" for Destiny will now illicit a knee-jerk negative reaction, despite the necessity.
And it should, the same can also be said about the next Xbox. If it is, it will be one of the things that'll put me off it.

  • And where are all these people who are mad about it in World of Warcraft? Guild Wars? Final Fnatasy XI? EQ? Etc. "Always on" is sometimes necessary, especially for multiplayer games. This is a multiplayer game, regardless of whether you can technically play it singleplayer. For games like this, A LOT of the processing is done server-side. And if the rumors are true, then it's possible that Destiny actually streams information, and your console actually only interprets and displays it, so that it can run incredibly well on a 360/ps3.

  • Destiny is not World of Warcraft and is not a PC game, it's more than likely going to be played most by Halo players and other console gamers, many who will not be used to the always online requirement. Have you not seen the Waypoint forums and the moaning about Spartan Ops always online requirement? All I'm saying is, is not everyone will want it all the time or be able to.

  • They have to draw the line somewhere. Not everyone can be a target. And there are several online-only xbox games. (I like how you chose WoW and Not FFXI - seeing how there is an online-only version for the xbox). Most people they're going to be targeting (and most people who have consoles, more specifically, xboxes) have internet. It's unfortunate if people fall outside their target audience, but if they have server tech that requires it, then they're targeting people who can access their server tech. Because hell, if we're going to try to target more people, why not target people who have no income? Or people who won't spend money on games? I bet if they made the game cost $0, they'd get WAY more people playing!

All I said is not everyone will want always online... you might, but not everyone. It's not about the whole target audience having the internet, You maybe lucky enough to have an amazing internet. That is reliable 100% of the time. Not everyone is.

  • Perhaps not everyone has good internet, and then this game won't be for them. It's a feature.

There is no perhaps about it. It is fact, if Destiny's always online "feature" is as was reported, it's a shame that many loyal Halo fans who helped get Bungie where they are today, may not get to play it. But at the same time it may help get some internet infrastructures around up to spec, for that matter it probably isn't the spec so much as companies being prepared to install the technology and the cost to do so.
