Characters 343i created that were GOOD

Title for reference. I think Del Rio had potential, but he was portrayed in an ill manner. I really like Lasky, shows a more human side during the conflict. Dr. Tillson was a great character despite her short time, in her I saw the innocence and grief of the human race. I was actually disappointed she didn't make it :/ I love Roland! He's not one of those stiff A.I.s like most

  • -Ur-Didact is a strong one for me, being a reader of the Forerunner books. -I like how 343 Guilty Spark was developed in the terminals. -Lasky is a bro. -Roland is hilarious. Sometimes it's as if he's breaking the fourth wall, and making references to our complaints about buttons and stuff. -Jul 'Mdama is easily one of the most interesting characters. At some points I actually found myself rooting for him. -Black Box was interesting, although I haven't read TFW, only Glasslands. -Del Rio had potential. I hope they flesh him out more in Halo 5. Perhaps we could see a trial post-New Phoenix incident, involving him and the Chief. -Palmer needs to piss off. -Finally, what 343i has done with Chief is fantastic. That last scene with Cortana, focus on what the Chief is saying and how he's saying it...

    • The Ur-Didact (as it was technically the Bornstellar-Didact that Bungie created) is a very interesting character with a lot of depth when you look at his backstory. That's the thing really, if you play Halo 4 without any knowledge about the Didact then he comes off as a bit of a shoddy villain, but if you look more deeply at his character in Cryptum, Halo 4's Terminals and the upcoming Silentium then he's one of the most fascinating, well-rounded characters in the series. Jul 'Mdama is another great character, despite the disagreements I have with much of what Karen has done in the Kilo-5 Trilogy, I think that she did a tremendous job developing Jul in The Thursday War and 343i continued that in Spartan Ops. What I find most interesting about him is that his goal is not the eradication of humanity like the other Covenant villains, at no point does he ever say that that's his goal. Jul is clever and manipulative, using the resources at his disposal to acquire knowledge and ultimately restore the Sangheili to their former, pre-Covenant glory rather than be stamped out by humanity once they recover. 343 Guilty Spark was treated like a complete joke by Bungie from Halo CE-3, but in CEA's Terminals Kevin Grace really developed him well as a tragic and lonely person. Greg Bear further developed this in Primordium where it's revealed that Spark is a fragment of Chakas, who was also given a great deal of backstory. Phillips and Black Box are more examples of characters that Karen wrote well, I really enjoyed reading the bits in The Thursday War where Phillips was having to fend for himself on Sanghelios and his witty commentary on things. Faber is awesome, one of the more interesting antagonists in the series - an almost Palpatine kind of figure who is manipulative of others in politics, but brutal and uncompromising in practice. Sanctioning the creation of the Halos to dominate life, using it to crush the San'Shyuum rebellion and sterilise them, performing tests on the Flood by letting them infect humans, and marooning the Ur-Didact in a Flood-infested system. The Sangheili Shipmaster in Halo: Evolutions - The Return (written by Kevin Grace, the same guy who single-handedly made 343 Guilty Spark a decent character) was really well-characterised in the short time he was present. Likewise with Soren-066, the deformed Spartan-II who goes missing on Reach in the story Pariah. Overall, I think that building characters is one of the main strengths of the writers at 343. Even those who are only present for a short time (like Doctor Tillson, as the OP pointed out) are really well characterised and can often make you feel sympathy for them.

      • None really. Roland was decent but got annoying. Cortana began to bitch more and more like a little girl. Chief talked too much. Yea, too much. I said it. Honestly with no Johnson, there's just no real funny badass cool character. I mean nobody was good enough to stick in my head as a good character. There's plenty of bad ones that come to mind though.

I don't understand the whole Lasky thing. 343 made a whole webshow to set up his character, and in-game he was completely different! He didn't even have the scar!

        • I liked Roland for some comic relief in the crap that was Spartan Ops. The Didact was okay, but I wanted to get more of a grip on his true personality. Del Rio had some potential, but got portrayed as a total dick, Lasky seemed like a total pushover, Palmer was okay, but was kind of a bitch, and everyone else was just awful. I like Halo 4, but its campaign was the worst by far.

        • No one at all. At all. They had like Lasky, Del Rio and Palmer. Lasky is a -blam!-ing gimp. Del Rio - helluva guy, portrayed wrong. Palmer - She can just -blam!- off back to the kitchen, seriously. None of the friggin' marines or Spartan IV's had unique characters, only Pete Stacker made a voice over appearance.

        • Tilson was a good character, I agree. It's a shame she didn't survive; I guess 343 put her in that situation to make the Composer scene more depressing. I enjoyed Roland in the CGI cutscenes. His interactions with Halsey imprisoned were great. In gameplay, his voice overs were just annoying.

343i created characters that were good? Can't figure out anybody. I mean Lasky is a pleasant character and all, but compared to all those horrible characters 343i spawned, he's almost insignificant. Or a shining light in the darkness - you choose. I liked 343i when they made side-stories only, comics, videos, books, that sort of stuff - therefore adding a bit more (well not exactly depth) to the Halo universe. I could also disregard it all as secondary cannon. But this Forerunner saga crap they spawned, that's just real bad. And to top it off, they based the new trilogy on it. Also - I can't believe they couldn't have come up with a good story without Master Chief. So much possibilities, yet they decide to continue the main story! But then again, they're just milking the Halo franchise, so I'm not surprised.

Obviously Lasky. The Didact was a tad cliche, but still an enjoyable villain. The Librarian seemed much older than I was expecting, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I still liked her, though obviously I preferred the Didact with his darker and more complex side. Del Rio was a great foil to John's dedication, split between Cortana and the UNSC/mankind in general, with the captain instead focussed on doing things by the book. It's a great way to illustrate the balance to be maintained in such settings as these, between the emotional, daring Lasky and John, and the regimen by which the military and the UNSC must abide in order to stay operational and succeed and protect mankind. John and Cortana... I honestly believe they are the two finest reinventions of game characters I've ever seen, especially John. 343 has made a sublime job of making him not only more relatable, but more motivated in his silent stoicism by knowing that he has to be strong to save mankind and Cortana, which he fails to do, at least in part.

              • I liked quite a few characters in the game. The Didact, Lasky, Hoya, Grant, Thorne, Dr. Tilson, and Roland were pretty good characters in my opinion. Del Rio was good too, except for being a total ass.

              • Roland and Lasky are pretty good. Sarah Palmer seems to be getting a big reaction from the community, so I'd say she's definitely among them. Thorne seems a bit too... you know, new kid on the block, got something to prove kind of character, if you get my drift. He's got potential though. I don't really know which characters I can say that they've made.

Damn, I wish I could text wall right now! But both the Ur-Didact and Bornstellar Didact (taking Cryptum and the Halo 3/4 terminals into account along with the in game material) are among my favorite characters in gaming.
