Knifes arent going to cause as much injury as guns. So its somewhat better I guess.

False. A defensive weapon is not rated on the scale that it caused injuries on. When you are in a situation that requires you to use a knife. By definition you are trying to kill your attacker by any means.

Whats going to cause more injury - A 9mm handgun? Or a switchblade?

Depends on how you define injury. A throat slash or an evisceration is a HUGE and ugly wound and not a very pleasant way to go. I've seen people take multiple .45 ACP hits and live to tell the tale. Hell, some of those patients came in cuffed because they killed the person who shot them. There is no simple comparison between the types of wounds or their inherent lethality. From a defensive point of view, firearms are preferred since you don't need to be within arm's length of your attacker. Here's a good rule of thumb when it comes to self-defense. If you are far enough away from "your threat" that you'd probably miss them if you threw your weapon at them? You should consider retreating instead of engaging. Of course having your weapon ready AS you retreat is a good idea, especially if your threat is attempting to close the gap and/or pursue.

Edited by Cameo Cream: 3/6/2013 10:18:54 PMWell anything can be lethal, I'm sure somebody could kill another person with a spoon if they desired. But lets says for consistency you shoot somebody in the chest with a gun, and the same with a knife. Now this all depends on the type of gun and knife. I would assume a bullet to potentially crack ribs and pierce the lungs or heart, the wound would also be much deeper but not as wide. A knife may not crack ribs and it may not get deep enough to pierce the heart or lungs - may. But it will cause more bleeding damage as the entrance wound would be wider. Both can very easily kill but this question may resolve this - If you had to fight somebody and you could pick the weapon they fight you with - A gun or a knife - which would you choose? I would chose a knife because in that situation I consider a knife to be less lethal than a gun.

9mm handgun, by far. especially with proper defense rounds.
