Not sure what to say about this. I mean, it sure is interesting, but since it's very loose speculation it's kinda hard to get any HSQ out of it. However, I do applaud you for that same reason; not making it be THIS HAS TO BE WHAT HAPPENS, so kudos on that. It's an interesting theory, it'd be cool if it turned out to be true.

Fair, it's a very loose thread of intuitions. But I hoped they would warrant people's interest. Thanks for that. The weakest link is probably the assumption that Humanity never knew where it came from even at the peak of their golden age at the time of the fall when the Traveler arrived to only save a fraction of them. Completely possible its origins, which could be much less exotic, were simply forgotten with the dead from that war. They were advanced enough to be high-tech intrastellar civilization, so they'd have the detection ability to track its trajectory through normal space and figure out were it came from, unless they were just so overwhelmed by their attackers they missed it.

D'oh. Just realized that they'd said that the Traveler not only protected "golden age humanity" from being wiped out but was instrumental in its ascendancy. That doesn't completely destroy the hypothesis, but it does further weaken the assumption that this future civilization would be unaware of the Traveler's origin. Imagine you're President of the Sol System. Would you, without need (without any perceived threat from other forces) accept the help of a strange force without knowing where it came from or what it's about? It becomes increasingly unlikely that its origins were unknown to that golden age population; I'm leaning more toward a "forgotten origin" possibility now for this setting, regardless of whether it was extradimensional, or less exotic...
