I really enjoyed the series, and the OVA that came out for it as well. The way it used a varied cast of characters and kept the action going was very nice. I think you would enjoy series such as: Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Hellsing Ultimate Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin (or the lack thereof) Ergo Proxy Gantz Ghost in the Shell Gungrave Monster (for your mention of attention to detail) Neon Genesis Evangelion Trinity Blood A couple of these mentioned series are staples, but Black Lagoon is in my opinion a little unique. It caters more to a western audience so I've listed some that also do that (though they are different in many other ways). The rest either have emotion, detail, some gunplay, and action.

it was a combination.the dialog fit and everything was good and went together great. i haven't seen such guntaku attention to detail in an anime before. GiTS is one of my favorite anime franchises. i believe it showcases the future of humanity(cybernetic implants eventually becoming widespread). i thought Trinity Blood was good, though a little lacking in back story (why is he a nanobot induced vampire space child?). schamploo was ok, the guy with a boombox in ancient japan was nonsensical. bebop and the movie was alright...some things never got explained that should have...

It also explains their ability to understand advanced technology. The nanotechnology was a means to boost their capabilities to live in a harsh environment.
