As much as The Old Republic did wrong, one thing I did like was the skill tree system. You would pick a class and somewhere along the skill tree progression you picked a specialization. Hypothetically, in Destiny you could choose the assault class, a regular ground pounding foot soldier for starters with a few general abilities, but after a while you are asked to commit to either the medic spec with healing abilities or the vanguard spec with shielding abilities for tanking (examples). This would promote class distinction and diversity by effectively doubling the possible classes for the player to choose.

  • I like this Idea, One improvement I'd make is that before you get to that chose between 2 separate roots, you would have multiple roots you could go down first. e.g. for the first few upgrades you'd get 1 upgrade everyone would have to choose for that class, then you would have a choice between 2 or more paths you could choose from so everyone doesn't all have the same upgrades. But you can only go up, you can't choose another upgrade on the same row. look at the image for help understanding what I mean. there'd probably be more upgrades before the specialisation, and the specialisation would act like you've just started a new class, it would repeat a similar process.

  • multiple specializations, so at the final branching there are a hundred or two hundred options... that way you don't just see parties of 15 snipers and 10 assault rifles. instead you'd get 1 grunt, 1 reaver, 1 bard, 1 gunslinger, 1 camo sniper, 1 silence sniper, 1 grenade warlock, 1 combat medic, 1 armor enhancer, 1 louisville slugger... etc etc etc.
