Here are a few things that come to mind:
- Skills should be permanent (no re-spec ability)
- They would not affect a player in "Faction Wars" - PvP should be a level playing field (with the obvious exception of aesthetics, and I could go on for days about the potential here)
- I would like to see at least 6-8 variances of each class. As in, my Hunter could eventually reach the end of a "branch" and have a specific title based on my choice of skill tree. Even with only 4 classes, this would allow for 26-32 different player-types to interact with throughout the universe.
- Non-combat-based skill sets - vehicle stats (+ %armor on ships), squad stats (all squad speed increase), exploration stats (better loot chances), etc.
- Overall, a very complex skill tree would be nice. I know they want to cater to all audiences, but it would be possible to show a skill tree of what should be followed while still allowing an advanced player to really strategize with their skill choices.
Hopefully that wasn't overbearing. I have a lot of ideas...

having a permanent spec is stupid. You think you are making people stick with the bad spec they pick out, but you are not solving anything. If they play for 2 days and find out they screwed something up, they will just make a new toon and re-build it the way they want. Not all people just copy specs. I am playing defiance right now and while I was a low level and could only have a few abilities I loved one spec, but as I got more options and found more ways to bend abilities into other abilities, then I like another spec more. If I was unable to change at all and had to start all over, I would of been kinda pissed and just kept my crap spec forever or quit the game. I like how you can respect and change the way your class lets you but at a fee. It gives you the option to change things around, but at the cost of 5 hours of game plays cash flow. Can you imagine if games like World of Warcraft didn't have any kind of respec? Person 1 - "O hey we need a healer and you have really good healing gear and we know you are good, come heal. Person 2 - Sorry the game wont let me, lets all just sit around and wait another hour until we find someone else"!

I understand why people like the permanent talent selections... however, the idea is kinda scary. I find that if I study a system, and find the best possible setup and pick talents accordingly... that somewhere down the line a talent or a specific build that shows an advantage will be nerfed into the ground leaving you stuck with what now will be a sub-par build, and you will be forced to re-roll.

Perhaps, but that is building around poor balance, and i don't believe that is a good idea. The whole point of perma-skills with no chance to re-spec is that if you can respec, it makes customization pointless, as everybody will simply pick the "best" build as found on google. Besides, if these elements don't heavily, or at all, effect pvp, then it won't be such a major concern.

I agree that's why i'm against permanent selections. I think a good compromise could be having an "amnesia" system where you unlearn all of your skills but stay at the same level and then as you play unlock all the skill points again on an accelerated curve which would allow you to re spec but would also make it something you wouldn't do on a whim.

that's not bad, or maybe allow you to level, and then give you a time limit on re doing your level up... maybe a week before your level up becomes permanent or something... even the levle up in dragon age, where you can go back as long as you don't finalize your level up is hugely important... as i'd constant' pick the wrong stuff at first
