I think it's just a common mistake. People see login used correctly as a noun and assume it's correct for all uses.

Drop-down lists drop down. Popup (or pop-up, if you prefer) windows pop up. And... You use a login screen to and login credentials to log in. In each of these cases, the verb form is two words and the noun is one word. True, the word is often hyphenated, but I don't think there is a hyphenated form for login.
