Because a lot of parents do a bad job of teaching their kids about what's actually a really important subject. People don't need to know how to live in the wild - they do need to know how to screw.

What about the "making things, cook food, get fit" part? The wilds was just to get attention lol. Many students don't know how to solder, cut stuff, put things together, you know MANUFACTURING! People want America to start MAKING things again, well we have to teach people HOW to first.

Edited by dr0cx: 2/1/2013 3:25:41 PMI don't know about your school district, but where I grew up there was a required cooking class in middle school an optional cooking course in high school. We also had required shop class in middle school complete with standard machines at the time (the cotton gin). There was an entire curriculum in my High School for people that wanted to work in construction and other laborer jobs. One class assembles and disassembles the same car every year. Gym class was every semester from K-12. Health was a required course my Freshman year. It discussed physical health, mental health, and that taboo subject "sexual education" that you are so terrified of. Oh no, if you tell the kids about hetersexaultiy, homosexuality, penises and vaginas they might start putting the wrong parts together. What I can't understand is the fear that people have about what others do consensually with their pubic nerve.

First off, holy shit I'm jelly about the schools you went to!
-
You don't need to know manufacturing. Cooking food and keeping healthy are also some pretty important things, but you can learn to cook yourself with a bit of time and practice without any real danger, and most schools already teach about as much about keeping healthy as they do about how to have sex without giving everybody VD and/or babies.
-
Seggi, there is nothing wrong with sex-ed I don't understand your arguement (if there is even one.) Sexuality is different from sex-ed
-
Well, in that case, teaching people about sexuality would be a good way to get them to be more accepting of non-heteronormative lifestyle. I don't think it's something that needs to be strongly prioritised like sex ed, but it'd be good for a kid to have a proper understanding of that kind of thing.
-
We should also teach them about all other lifestyles then?
-
Edited by Seggi: 2/3/2013 3:49:37 AMIt depends on the circumstances. Some, maybe. Most don't need to be 'taught'.
-
Why do only the homo, bi, lesbian, and trans, lifestyles need to be taught and not others? If you want to learn lifestyles within a sex-ed course things would get way off into a tangent. It would turn into some sort of psychology/anthropolgy course instead of a bio lesson on reproductinon and safe sex.
-
Edited by Seggi: 2/3/2013 4:06:38 AMBecause there's not really a significant need to have people be more accepting of most other kinds of lifestyles.
-
Why don't we boil it down to: Treat people nice as long as they're not breaking the law.
-
Because that's clearly not adequate to help people understand these alternative lifestyles.
-
So if somebody tells you poop tastes bad, you'd taste it before you accept that it tastes bad?
-
If you're not going to honestly pay attention to what I say, I'm not going to bother saying things.
-
I get it you want a reason behind "why you should accept them". But explaining to a kid that homos only stick in the pooper, and lesbians like to eat out...might be a bit too much info for a 12 year old lol jk. But seriously, I'm not ignoring what you're saying...it's just that I don't think you get that these aren't high school kids we're talking about, we're talking about elementary and middle school kids here learning sex-ed. Whenever the teacher utters the word "penis" they start giggling. The topic of sexuality is definitley fine for high school level IMO.

Then why does this thread even exist.

*sigh* Because of the thread this was inspired from. That OP wanted 5th and 8th graders to know how to "prepare their anus" for homosexual intercourse. I said WTF why? And he goes cause nobody else will inform them. *BOOM THREAD APPEARED* He wanted school to be teh place to lurn erry thing.
