What book/website/guide/program would you suggest to a person interested in learning how to make a video game, assuming they have no prior experience in the subject.

 • Not a Bungie employee, and I have pretty limited experience to share, but I'm bored so here's my two cents: Figure out what it is about creating a video game that you enjoy. Creating a video game can be amalgamation of disciplines from programming to design to art, and enjoying all of them I'd have to call exceedingly rare. You may want to first explore what specifically about creating a video game you're passionate about. This blog was made for a Forge community, and so pretty much everything is written from the perspective of you trying to create a map for Halo. However the lessons can all be generalized, and I gained a lot of insight through reading it. I'd say the focus is on gameplay and environment design, but it does dabble in other topics. I'd also call these topics the core of a game, and one of the few aspects that can make or break the game (anything can break a game really, but a lot of things only if they're done in a brutally awful way.) The other way to learn is by doing. Start small, because creating something from scratch with no experience it can be daunting and overwhelming. Do something small in a system that is streamlined (continuing with our example of Forge in its heyday, art done, code done, tons of active communities willing to playtest and provide feedback.) Learn from your mistakes, always push your boundaries and try something crazy or new. And good luck and stuff.

 • I second this. I'd like to know where to start, what tools to use, and what painsakingly gruesome things the Bungie guys learned the hard way.

 • I'm actually interested in this, as well. I can lay as much groundwork as I want (And I have XD) but a good ol' battle buddy and I have never been able to take the next step.
