I think if you're simply following a Private Group, you can read, but you can't post. If you join, you get to post. I believe. I could be wrong.

So they aren't "private" anymore?

I'm pretty sure you can still only see what is made"public," like the thread in the Welcoming Committee. You can't see the other threads in the group, nor can you see most threads in other groups (in HFCS, for example, I doubt you can see all the threads created).
