I would argue that it's significantly harder to put faith in something larger than myself than just rely on my own willpower.
but turning myself, my success, and my destiny over to someone else? I can't do that.
It seems like you agree. It's a lifelong effort to reach the point of humility that peoples' faith commands.

The point of humility that is described by the OP honestly disgusts me, though. I don't see it as something to strive for.

That's because you (I'm assuming) aren't religious. To religious people, they believe an omnipotent being created them and for some unfathomable reason actually gives a shit about them. For that person to brag about what they've accomplished just seems ridiculous given the previous statement. That isn't to say that a religious person shouldn't feel a sense of accomplishment, but to be overtly proud of something gives importance where there is none. Bench press 300? Great, ultimately it's entirely useless. Are you a doctor that has saved hundreds of lives? Well done, but every person is still going to die. To a religious person, human accomplishments shouldn't mean much beyond our limited perspective. Romans 12:3 "For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith,"

Believing in yourself disgusts you? Having the willpower to push through pain disgusts you?

I think he was saying it disgusts him that some people strive to give credit for their success to God.
