-blam!-'s sake, can we all stop lumping religion into one steaming pile of shit? Not only are there multiple steaming piles of shit, there're also some piles that aren't shit at all.
And *made up number*% of religious conversations go nowhere because no one's talking about the same thing.
You can't even name a religion, because everyone's take on it is so different. The best you can do is find one person, get them to explain their views, and then discuss.
Edit: I can say shit but not the f-word? This is blatant vulgarity discrimination and I'll have none of it.

The difference is that "turning yourself over to a higher power" is an almost universal concept of religion.

Well, I think the problem is that religion is so often an analogy. Certainly a huge chunk of people have taken it literally, but I don't think it was intended to be, or at least it shouldn't. Think about even 100 years ago, where almost everyone would be religious. If all those people had simply turned themselves over to God, and not done an assload of work and personal development themselves, the entirety of human history would be a stagnant period with no progress until atheism. I don't think you have to sacrifice anything of yourself in order to follow any of the common religions.

Edited by OaklandPaintbalr: 1/21/2013 2:55:50 AMYou're missing my point. Those people believed that they wouldn't succeed without faith. And when they do succeed, they think faith was the reason for their success, and they thank god for their success.

Clearly you don't understand religion in the slightest. And if someone decides to attribute a higher power with their success , what of it? At least they are succeeding.

Who are 'those people'? I'd say it's a safe assumption to make that most religious people were taught their religion from birth, and not shown any alternatives until it was well ingrained into their lives. If you already believe that success is achieved through faith, isn't it an easy decision to be faithful? And the once you succeed, is it not an easy connection that it was your faith that brought you success? I don't agree with their thinking, but I can certainly understand why they think the way they do.
