  • I've been around a .416 Barrett Model 99. Being in California that is the only legal Barrett Rifle available. It's only slightly smaller then the .50 bmg in bullet diameter, same powder charge I believe. When it fires, it's like a kick in the chest. One helluva' rifle.

  • There's my .50, not as bad as you would think. It's gas operated and weights 4.5 lbs. which helps a lot too. Still a beast of a gun though.

  • .50 AE =/= .50 BMG Not even comparable. Once more, caliber is a TERRIBLE method for determining energy, velocity, terminal power, ballistics.

  • He didn't specify the case only the size. There is no comparison and if knows someone with a .50 BMG chambered firearm I hope he invites me along. ;)

  • He's just showing off Recon. I told him what a terrible purchase it was when he got it. It's a Novelty gun in my eyes, serves no real purpose. I like my collection to have a purpose other then just being different.

  • I'm no gun enthusiast. I just know that .50 cal is a huge bullet.

  • The .50 AE is the largest handgun cartridge on the left group. It is a large cartridge and has a significant amount of powder capacity and a large/heavy/wide bullet (for a handgun). The .50 BMG is the rightmost beast that goes out of frame. Same diameter bullet, but MUCH longer and heavier a projectile than the AE. And as you can see, the case holds a crap-ton of propellant. It is nearly an artillery shell. You can also use this graphic to compare the .22 LR to the .223 Remington (aka 5.56 NATO) which is what the AR-15 fires. Some folks use the caliber comparison to say "it's hardly bigger than a .22" which is true of the bullet diameter, but not of the bullet itself or of the case. Like I said, caliber is a crappy way to compare cartridges for power or effectiveness.
