Update: We took out our brand new Henry 'Big Boy' .45 Caliber Lever Action rifle today, and I filmed it!
Holy crap, my ears are still ringing.
[Editors note: I understand that I need to wear hearing protection. Normally I do but this time this one single time I didn't. There is no need to inform me in your post.]
So I heard gunshots coming from my neighbors house; he has a shotgun that he shoots every now and then but then I heard about five shots being fired extremely quickly and I had to check it out.
[Sorry for the little story but it was the only way I felt I could appropriately describe shooting the rifle]
I heard more gunshots echoing over the hill as I left my house. Once I started to get closer I called over to make sure they wouldn't fire as I approached.
He handed me the rifle and I looked it over. It was an AK47; it had a fore-grip under the barrel, a rail system on top and a thirty round mag. I took off the safety and aimed at a hey-bale set up in his front yard. I looked down the sight and fired a single shot. BANG! I took a step back; stunned momentarily by the loud noise. My ears were ringing to the point I couldn't hear. (None of us were wearing ear protection, and this is the first time I've ever fired a rifle like this.)
I looked over at my neighbor and laughed; the sheer power of the weapon completely took me by surprise. I planted my feet and took aim at the bale of hey once more. My hand held the fore-grip tightly as I prepared for the recoil I was now expecting. BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click. The magazine was empty. Even though I was prepared for the massive noise of the rifle, it still nearly took me by surprise. Out of ammo we started to walk back to his house; picking up shell casings along the way.

So yea that was cool. My dad just bought a Henry Lever Action .45 rifle and I can't wait to fire it! Any of you guys shoot guns regularly? Its really nice living in a place like I do where I can just walk out into my backyard if I want to do some target practice.

1 ReplyEdited by Recon Number 54: 1/18/2013 10:50:06 PMWhat cartridge is that Henry firing? .45 ACP? .45 long? .45-70? Based on the vid, I am suspecting the Long Colt, but can't be sure. Late Add: Also, I noticed that in every instance I could see, all shooters dismounted the rifle in order to cycle the action. That seems odd. Especially in the fact that you're chambering a new cartridge and the muzzle is swinging in an arc and not consistently pointed downrange. Not that it is my place to lecture anyone, but I would ask if there is/was a reason to not reload/lever while keeping the rifle shouldered.

Bump for update!

I went shooting with my dad today. We used his Para-Ordnance/Colt Gold Cup hybrid. We did better on the first target than on the second, which threw off my concentration, which threw off my aim, continuing until we were out of ammo. I have a Charles Daly Field Shotgun with horrendous recoil because of how light it is. Birdshot out of it feels like buckshot out of my dad's side by side.

1 ReplyEdited by me123456789: 1/18/2013 3:55:35 AMThere's my current collection, I'm waiting for a suppressor to clear for my .45 but its already been 6 months just for the ffl store to store transfer! Shot an AK once and I shoot my brother's SKS all the time, it was a lot smoother then I thought it would be. Those Henry's are pretty neat.

1 ReplyYour neighbour shoots a rifle in his house? Isn't that dangerous?
-
2 RepliesSo you got to shoot an AK and you're getting a lever action rifle? I envy you.
-
10 Replies
it had a fore-grip under the barrel
Eww. There is ONE proper builds for an AK. Classic. All that tactical crap looks ridiculous. :)

OMG YOU'RE SO LUCKY OP! I've always wanted to shoot an AK-47, but with the recent executive orders by Obama I might not ever too unless I move to Mexico or something.
-
1 ReplySounds like fun, OP. I've always wanted an AK, but I don't have the money right now. I remember the first time I handled a gun. My brother and brother-in-law went down to this farm they owned and brought a bunch of their stuff with 'em. Spent a good two hours shooting pop cans. I own a S&W1911 and a Remington 700 now. They're great fun! I envy that AK, though. Sounds like a real beast.

1 ReplyTarget practicing is awesomely fun. You should wear ear protection when dealing with those kinds of guns though.
-
Cool.
-
7 RepliesOh, dude, NEVER shoot without wearing ear and eye protection unless it's an absolute emergency and you have to. You're gonna go deaf! Still, glad you had a good time. That's a fun rifle, and very reliable. Still a big fan of the SCAR, though :-D

No, nor will I ever own a gun.

I have a 12 gauge Mossberg Maverick 88 that I shoot regularly. My uncle owns a dozen rifles of different calibers, an AR-15, multiple handguns of different calipers and models and a few shotguns. My Sister's boyfriend also has a .22 Marlin and the same shotgun I have with a shorter barrel. We go shooting quite often, we are all getting pretty good at aiming at both still and moving targets. We are also preppers like you would see on the show "Doomsday Preppers", so that is the main reason we go shooting a lot.
Holy crap, my ears are still ringing.
Rule #1: EAR PROTECTION Fun to shoot, aren't they?
-
6 RepliesI wouldn't mind recreational gun ownership and target shooting here, if it were legal.
-
7 Repliesno, you didn't, OP. you fired either a bastardized AKM or AK74 clone.
-
12 RepliesOh, might I add. That Henry Rifle you have is a helluva' rifle with a helluva' round. That 45-70 Govt doesn't mess around. It was popular for Buffalo hunting. That may have a bit of a kick to it. Hope you enjoy it.
-
4 RepliesSo he just gave you a gun?? And these are the responsible gun owners people talk about?
-
I have owned an SKS for quite some time.
-
11 RepliesI have a relative who owns a .50 cal I want to shoot it soooooooooooooooooo bad!

Shooting without ear protection is a big no no. Even some ear plugs should be the very least you use. I personally use a pair of noise canceling shooting headphones so I can hear sounds, but it dulls the shot. Glad you had a good time though. I shot a SAIGA 7.62x39mm rifle last weekend and I was astounded how smooth of a system that is. On par with an AR-15 with a good stock on it. I loved it, but I'd still take an AR anyday. Of course I prefer something with a bit more bite. Like 12 gauge shotguns and my Mosin Nagant.

Today was a good day, I didn't have to use my AK

The funnest gun I've ever shot was a Thompson Submachine Gun, I want to shoot it again so badly but I doubt I will get a chance anytime soon. Never shoot a gun without ear or eye protection though, it's one of the dumbest things you can do.
-
I've shot more firearms than I can count or name! I own a Mossburg 500 12ga shotgun for skeet and trap, and planning on purchasing my first handgun at the end of this month at a nearby gun show. Thinking maybe a Baretta M9 or 92FS, but we'll see.

AK-47s have way less recoil than I expected.
