•
Posted by: DeathsWatch
Posted by: wolfy 9r9r Of course. It's really rather annoying, when people think about things like "Do I really exist?" You're thinking right now! OF COURSE YOU EXIST!! XD
The true philosopher questions everything. Take Douglas Adam's idea, there is a finite number of habited planets in the universe, but an infinite number of uninhabitated planets. Any number over infinity is so close to nothing that the average is zero. Therefore none of us exist.
? That doesn't make any sense. Because there's more uninhabited planets then inhabited, we don't exist? There is no number over infinity, because it's infinity! And how does that have to do with our existence?

 • Obligatory Descartes quote. Actually, whether we exist or not is a matter of perception. At this point, I could go into Indian philosophical interpretations on this matter but that would be a waste of time.

 •
Posted by: JusSeeMe From my alt: To think, in a large amount of years, when nothing exists, there will just be space. Just space. No stars or planets, or galaxies. What we see, is just what our brain interprets. Everywhere you look, you see atoms, molecules, and matter. But what is it? What if we could not see atoms? Matter would not be distinguishable. If there were not 'molecules', there would be nothing. So in a way, molecules could just be an illusion, and behind it there is something else. There is a slight chance that a few animals can see right through this illusion. What do we really see? Can we see certain colors? No. Again, this could merely be a fragment of our imagination, just an illusion that our eyes perceive. If everything is made up of molecules, what allows us to distinguish colors and texture? What if that cube is actually a circle? What if that closet is actually a door? To think, without our eyes we would not be able to see. But why do we need eyes? What if life was actually what it is to blind, and sight was just a form of natural selection and evolution, that went wrong. And now, all we see is this illusion and newer species of animals see right through this 'layer'? Air is composed of molecules, just as the screen near you. Why do we see it invisible while this is solid? Air is a fluid, but why is it invisible? A flaw in sight. What we see is what our brain interprets. Or what our brain interprets is what we see. For all you know, you could be in a coma, imagining this waiting to wake up. Do we really exist? Such a question is near impossible for our brain to deduce. Our senses have limits, we cannot see certain colors, and possibly feel certain textures, hear certain sounds, taste certain things, and smell certain tings, which could compose a whole other 'world'. How different life would be if we could see things differently. I cannot fathom the importance of our senses and the flaws which allow us to perceive the world differently than other species. We cannot perceive ultraviolet radiation from other plants as it destroys our retinas. And bees cannot see red, possibly for the same reason. A snake sees an infared picture from other objects. Lizards can smell their prey and flies have a reaction time much faster than a human. And how a rat moves when an owl is about to capture it as it calculates the distance and time relative to the place it will be. The world, universe, is much different than what other animals see as our senses are limited in certain ways and so are theirs. What we see is only a narrow window of observations, and a creation of our imagination. Other animals perceive the world much different from us. What is round to us may be square to them. And they could see right through this 'illusion' that we are looking at right now. Saying we exist because we can taste hear see smell and feel is irrelevant because if we believe the definition of existence based on our ability to perceive the world, then other parts of the universe, other animals would be considered non-existent. Ideally, we see ourselves only because of the senses given to use by Nature. Other creatures may see us as a nonentity. Therefore, us existing could be just a fragment of our imagination, and what we see is just an illusion of what really is there. One once said "Does the tree exist in the forest when there is no one to look at it?" No. It is only in the eye of the beholder. Plants are a part of life, but to our knowledge they don't see, but who knows, they might be seeing through this illusion. Do molecules really exist, or are we imagining it? Molecules could just be an illusion, masking the true world, preventing us from seeing the real world. Or maybe, what we see is just our imagination, and nothing exists. I can never fathom the world, our existence, and life.
i agree, maybe what we see isnt there, or, what is there is what we cant see. [Edited on 02.10.2011 7:46 PM PST]

 • Why do we need to exist? All that matters is how we live our lives. Doesn't matter if it's real or not.

 • I've once thought of this thing where, YOU are the only real living person in the world; the world being like the Matrix - just an ultra-real computer simulation that your brain is plugged into, which is why you can "see" or "feel" things. But everything you do is not real; in reality, you are not on the Internet. You're lying in a pod filled with goo, and plugged into a bunch of machines. And all us "people" you meet? Merely NPCs in the simulation. Your player character in the simulation is not conversing with people, but AI bots generating responses. Everyone on Earth is plugged into their own simulation. They do not connect with each other. Everyone's world is completely different. For example, YOU may be living in a 21st century urban setting, while the person in the pod next to you is plugged into a simulation of 5th century Japan. Stuff like that. And, once again, no one in your simulation is an actual living person. boy, this sounds like the resolution of a creepypasta or something.
