I actually like the armor changes, they've really livened up build crafting. Have you tried a Grenade build with +200 Grenade stat? It'll hit like a truck.

That's no different to +300% DVI/DVM in Dead Frontier 2, livened up build crafting? Maybe but more often than not the balance on difficulty will revolve there, making such build almost mandatory to finish and shoehorning your build to narrow range of choice where you focus on DPS all the time

Which is why I don't really like the "difficulty" and "challenge" part of any game nowadays. In Dead Frontier 2 you can still somewhat build for different builds but damage will stay as main build along with another build you want unless you want to spend hundreds to thousands of bullets through enemies and bosses (or fuel if you use chainsaw build)
