Sony purchased Bungie, the original studio behind Halo and the maker of Destiny 2, for a whopping $3.6 billion in 2022. Following the sale, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons purchased over 20 classic cars in online auctions costing millions of dollars, according to his account on the website Bring A Trailer. He continued buying them even after mass layoffs at the studio.

Classy dude.

It's bad optics, but the cars are bought with his own personal money. I see so many people acting like the dude cleared out Bungie's bank account to buy cars and just running with that narrative.

Edited by mfx-one: 8/1/2024 3:33:32 PMYes, mostly just bad optics.

And the company panders to the woke mob
-
The cars are cool though so I think it’s justifiable
-
The basement lords here will probably that the layoffs are because of "the woke" instead of deranged greed and mismanagement.
-
The woke mind virus is indeed the root cause of all the world’s problems right now. /s

Why not both? 🤷♂️
*basement intensifies*
I can understand wanting to enjoy some toys but there is a difference between getting a couple of cool toys vs a fleet. Especially when you have a game that you know you have to keep delivering on otherwise there is this thing called the IRS and bankruptcy court that can come and take that all away.
-
The game and his personal finances are completely separate things. Also wtf would the IRS have to do with coming for his cars if Bungie doesn't do well?
-
That is honestly absurd and such an indictment of the infantilized CEO mindset of pursuing excessive wealth and prioritizing the accumulation of property and status symbols over a healthy labor force. It’s just gross.
-
And shows zero accountability. He said “We were overly ambitious” regarding the financials. We? Who’s we? I’m willing to bet none of the people who were fired had anything to do with financial decisions. Actually one of them was going to be on maternity leave starting next Monday. And apparently he showed his new cars to another person he fired, two days ago. How do you know you’re firing someone and brag about the millions you spend? Utterly disgusting behaviour.

Edited by mfx-one: 8/1/2024 2:14:44 AMIt’s nuts man. Behavior I just cannot and never will understand. When you take into consideration the sustained popularity of this franchise and some of the sales and preorder numbers over the years, it’s really odd to see a CEO trot out a sob story that basically acknowledges mismanagement from the top down. It sounds like it’s either rank incompetence that did them in or the current AAA video game business model is just not sustainable because I can’t imagine being in a better position than Bungie was when Destiny was at its peak.
