Unfortunately, a lot of people come here to complain/vent and the way some people talk, you’d think they were forced to play this game at gunpoint. It’d be nice to see more lighthearted chats and balanced opinions about the game, but those kinds of posts rarely get as much attention.

  • Check player numbers, games tanking. I'm sure some are happy but right now we're back to the 800k daily addicts.

  • I can’t remember if it was you I already had this conversation with or someone else, but the daily numbers don’t tell you the overall population. There’s no way for us to know how many are playing everyday, every few days, once a week, etc. “800k daily addicts” is a pretty wild assumption to make. Either way, criticism of the game is fine. It’d just be nice to see more balanced opinions and more fun conversations. It’s a video game, not a trip to the dentist.

  • I've followed numbers for many years & I'm pretty sure 800k is the addict number lol. Games built on addiction, you have to be addicted to log in every day & do the same thing over & over, you're either earning money or you're addicted. Once you get below 800k you're in trouble regarding revenue & people not returning because once the addiction is broke people move on & don't come back. Warmind had 800k & the only time it's dropped below that since was during the last 9 months of light fall & that saw the revenue miss, layoffs & the director losing his job. I remember the Activision earnings call saying destiny had a 6m quarterly user number, this was early D2. D2 on launch day had 5m users, so it's not a stretch to use release days numbers as the active population given everyone wants to play day 1, not everyone can play but I'd say 90% minimum will wanna play. Forsaken had 4.5m, WQ had 2.6m, Lightfall 2.8m, Final Shape had just 1.9m. We hit 200k during curse of Osiris & bungie admitted they nearly closed down. We are just above that 800k baseline right now, it's gonna be interesting to see if they can get people back or if the dropoff continues

I agree the numbers are interesting, but that’s a conversation for a different topic post. Whatever the numbers are doing, people that regularly play the game are generally having fun. If not, they’ve got bigger problems than a video game.

  • This is where the addiction part takes over though, they still log in & play even though it not fun, it's a routine, a habit. I know because I'm part of it. I'm sat here now with the game on but I'm not playing, I've music & I'm talking on here.

  • Well that’s something you can fix for yourself, but don’t make that assumption for others who play the game and enjoy it.

  • Tbf 800k daily actually isn't bad for a 5ish year old (not including d1) fps mmo light. I've seen a lot of games start higher and drop faster and harder in that time frame.

  • Apparently destiny is very expensive to maintain & they need revenue to keep it going. CMS are on 95k, some Devs are on 180-300k, they've around 1500 staff & are in Seattle were it's by all accounts super expensive. 800k seems a lot, but it's a baseline I think of staying afloat, whenever we've dropped below we've seen layoffs, directors & leads move on, bungie said they nearly shutdown during curse & that had lows of 200k & it's a lot more expensive to do things now. With Sony involved things may be different but I reckon they're itching to take full control

  • Yeah I remember hearing they burn money fast, but I just meant for a game of its age especially with how many games have tried to take a piece of its pie over the years. I kinda want to know what eververse costs them yearly though, there's a lot of 3d model work that goes into those assets, and I can't imagine just supplying all of them Is inconsequential.

  • A lot of it is outsourced to china, India. It's a lot cheaper. But I'd have no clue about cost. Did you see the picture doing the rounds, 3 ships flying from the pale heart & they're actually flying backwards, or 2 of them are. That's outsourcing to people who just assumed wings go that way lol.

  • Sony don't need permission to take control. They can just do it. They own the place.

  • The agreement is the board is 5 people, 3 bungie 2 Sony, so bungie are in control of gaming decisions. However, should they miss revenue targets agreed on, Sony can absolve the board & take total control. So they can't take over, just yet. Bungie are fighting at last, with all the changes & communication, but numbers drop daily & the expansion lead left 2 weeks ago.

  • Did you see that Helldivers steam numbers have decreased by 90%? That's not the total population of course but it is another Destiny killer biting the dust

  • There's never been a real destiny threat & that's the problem. 3rd person shooters aren't a threat, especially ones not on all platforms. Borderlands was the only real one & it wasn't live service. People want immersion & good gunplay, you get neither in 3rd person. It's telling that a few studios started making destiny type games, EA was one & I think Activision had their studios start one, both where scrapped so there's likely some truth to bungies claims that it's very hard running this game.

  • It was claimed to be a destiny killer, at least I've seen people say as much on these forms. Just like that first descendent

  • People think looter shooter means destiny challenger. Destiny isn't really a looter anymore is it tbh. There were leaks several years ago about parsons laughing in a team meeting about people saying 3rd person shooters were competition. Destiny & CoD dominate their areas because of how they feel to play, they both have major issues but feel good to play at a base level, people -blam!- enjoy FPS are never get that immersion from a 3rd person game. Borderlands Devs said they were hired to try to make borderlands gunplay feel like destiny. You'll never get that in 3rd person games

  • For me, any game that would get the destiny player base to move away from destiny to play whatever game it was would qualify. Wouldn't have to be FP shooter. While nothing has come close to removing the core player base from this game, apart from Bungies own errors, they won't be able to be complacent that this will never happen.

  • Because outside of the initial content drop of TFS, theres nothing to do. All TFS/seasonal weapons crafted, pinnacle power reached, XP stalled out for Act II. Next week numbers will rise for the week until Act II is burnt through, then drop off again as usual. It seems to be much faster to drop off after content is gone through than what it was before. Players dont want to stick around and run through the same content as much as they used to. Possibly tied to difficulty changes, other games released, the age of this game and how much time they have spent in it that it gets boring faster once content is solved?
