It really is simple. It is cost to benefit ratio. Linux gamers make an extremely small portion of gaming. Estimates are 1.27% of gaming market share is held by Linux. Even at the full market at 4% it is still less than 25% of MacOS, and that is not supported either. At that point it is hard to justify the expense of adding support for Linux even if you do not include the risks associated with it from a security standpoint. Do you really think that they will sell enough Linux only copies of the game to justfiy not only the recode of the game but salaries of support techs needed for ongoing support of Linux and its almost 1000 variations?
Speaking as someone who has tinkered with Linux and seen its capabilities for what it really is, I dont see a company that has no history of supporting it, choosing to do so.
Linux is in a classic catch 22 situation, not enough people use it for it to matter to devs and it does not have enough people to use it because devs dont support it.
Are they afraid that Linux users, with their very customizable Operating systems, can circumvent security features? If that's the case, then how bad is your security?
The game was built for Windows, it has security that was designed for Windows. Any application built from the ground up for Windows would have security vulnerabilities when used in Linux's ecosystem that allows everything from the kernal up to be accessed and tweaked by anyone with a keyboard and a little bit of googlefu.
If they refuse me entry just because I use Linux, then I will take my leave until they allow me entry again.
As in your right, I just would not hold my breath. Destiny and loads of other games have shown 0 interest in Linux, its just not worth while as a business decision.

Edited by ArvolyTheGlutenIntolerant: 3/12/2024 1:41:26 PMI get what you are saying and yeah I don't see it happening anytime soon, which is a shame. Though what confuses me is that Steam uses Proton (which is a compatibility layer), with which I can run games made specifically for Windows, like Warframe and Path of Exile for example, on the Linux Mint distro. So theoretically Destiny 2 should be able to run under Proton (relatively speaking). I don't believe a full recode is needed as both these mentioned games do not support Linux natively yet works fine under Proton. So sure, best case we get a native version for Linux, but more realistically we should be allowed to play Destiny through Proton. Though it is still a dream unfortunately and would not guarantee decent performance.

Bungie's in house anticheat does not play well with proton, additionally Bungie hates emulation/vm. That aside, even if it did play ok with proton, wine, or whatever, Bungie would need to have staff at least as knowledgeable with linux as they do windows, which they apparently do not.
