I'm not going to debate the validity of your opinion as I don't play anywhere near enough PvP to do so but I do have a question for you. When so many players clamored for more gunplay in PvP and Bungie obliged, not just with increased ability cooldowns but also with reduced special ammo, what was actually expected to happen? Isn't it a given conclusion that primaries such as HCs would become the go-to weapon in the mode?
Edit: Let's not forget about bows either, since that seems to be a pain point lately on forum as well.

Weapons are tuned differently in checkmate and hand cannons, specifically 120’s, are out of whack/op compared to the weapon pool. Op is not complaining about the gunplay, it is the buffs on some weapons and nerfs on others that are inside the game mode.. Hand cannons are getting a checkmate nerf next season… but only body damage. Said adjustment is not going to fix anything because you pretty much have to aim at the knees to not get a crit shot with 120rpm hand cannons.

I'll take you on your word; as I said, I don't play enough to know personally. It just sounds somewhat like "buyer's remorse" to me. So many wanted a mode like this and now there're posts asking for weapon nerfs across the board. Isn't it possible there will never be a mode that's actually satisfying?

It’s more that other primaries got nerfs in Checkmate and HCs didn’t. The rest of the weapon set feels alright save for TL ARs. The only solvable is shifting RoF, but that’ll jack up weapon feel

But I've seen where others have posted that Target Lock shouldn't even exist in PvP let alone on ARs, and I'd wager there would be some outrage if anything were to change on HCs. So where's the middle ground?

HCs are the Destiny equivalent of the Halo Battle Rifle. They are coddled and given special treatment under the defense of being a ‘utility weapon’ ie good at all ranges. This is no secret. But let me put it plainly. Hypothetically, if all weapons do 100 damage over 1s, then a new game mode comes out where all weapons do 75 damage over 1s except for 1 that still does 100, what do you think the player base will choose?

Okay, so how about this scenario? A choice of several preset loadouts. Each loadout would have a balance between the various expectations (range, damage, rate of fire, whatever); that way no one could justifiably claim a particular weapon/type is overpowered, as it would be solely on the skill of the player themself, thus eliminating a need for any further nerfs.

Edited by Kocobo Lobo: 11/16/2023 7:04:44 AMOh that would definitely be more balanced, but part of Destiny PvP’s identity is the ability to bring whatever you want in. It’s not easy and will never be entirely balanced, but that’s why it’s always a work in progress.

Well then, I guess all that can be done is to wish Bungie the best of luck in finding the 'sweet spot' that somehow appeases a large enough population of the PvP player base.

I should note that I think HCs are well balanced in standard PvP. Just not checkmate.
