Since FOTL first returned in d2, it's been a saying in my group that it's called "Festival of the lost potential". We say this even now. It's obvious that these yearly events are mainly here to make eververse look highly desirable to anyone with the money to spare but the quality of rewards has significantly tanked in basic event grind. Having us purchase an event pass INSIDE an on going season? That's upsetting considering the rewards are laughable and undeserving of another 10 dollars...
The gameplay loop in this event is basically what we've been doing each season since beyond light.
-Do horde mode/core playlist/etc
-grind special currency relating to event
-unlock stuff with said currency
-repeat till there's nothing left
This kind of REPETITION has already been present in d2 for some time as many in this community have already covered but allow me to share some personal thoughts on this year's Festival.
I strongly dislike it.
Now I'm a fan of Halloween and I fell in love with this event in D1 but I was only around for the last one unfortunately as i came into this amazing community on new years day of 2016 but the rewards, probably much less to offer than currently, were very memorable. 2 in particular being the infamous Superblack Shader and the Fire Wolf Mask. There was probably more but I can't remember to be completely honest. D2's FOTL has big potential but it's like Bungie is choosing to ignore it. Bring back what made this event good. Bring back spooky shaders, ones that actually make my character look like a real creature of the night not some clown or space Olympian. Bring back creative animated masks. Make a cool side story we can do like the murder mystery. Do something new instead of leaning heavily on "grind this kill that".
It seems another burnout period is coming for a lot of other people and events are supposed to let us have some fun to alleviate that feeling, not bore us to death even more with ridiculous grinds for a seal and triumph score... Past years of FOTL have been a huge let down with the poorly designed armor sets, even worse shaders, and the gameplay loop. This year is no different.
Rant is over, go ahead and put me on blast but it's frustrating seeing the degradation of events in destiny over the years. I mean... We've baked cookies how many years in a row for Christmas??? Yea, anyways... back to playing destiny like the typical frustrated player
